I am looking to buy my first Sat Nav and considering the nuvi 1490 LMT with lifetime free map updates. I have discovered that the model is to be discontinued in the spring when a whole new range of Android Garmin machines are to be launched.
When this happens how long will I be likely to get manufacturers support in terms of software updates and maps for the nuvi 1490 in order to keep it fully operational and up to date.
Since I have no experience of the Sat Nav market I am afraid that what seems on the face of it to be a good offer of free maps would be useless if the useful life of the machine is restricted by discontinuation.
If I wait until the spring what might be the advantages of an new Android model.
Would appreciate any advice.
Cheers.

I wouldn't bother to wait. I have a 1490 and it's an excellent GPS, very stable with the latest software. Garmin have a habit of

a) supporting older devices well

b) issuing new ones with many bugs in them!

I wouldn't take that to mean they are giving up on hardware PNDs.

The smartphone market is growing, but there will be dedicated sat-navs for a long time yet!

I thought the new units were not Android based machines, but rather updated versions of the current platform but with connectivity ability to Android smartphones for data use (ie. traffic)?

I contacted them about that as I have two i3s for which no updated maps are available.

They told me that maps would be available for as long as you own the unit.
