Hello!

When I use TomTom 3 in map mode, I can see my position on the map while driving. But if I'm driving to south, in the map mode i'm driving "downwards".
Is there any function that will rotate the map while driving, so the gps mark would always point up on the screen, and I would see the road "as it comes in front of me". I hope someone understands my meaning.

You should be using Navigator mode for this.

It's by design, in MAP mode, North is always up. In NAVIGATOR mode, track is up so you will always be travelling up the screen.

MAP mode was intended for route planning purposes.

It would be very helpful to have an option to turn on street names in navigator view or to have an option to mark direction traveling always up in map mode. I am not always navigating to somewhere and would just like to be able to see where I am quickly. This is not as easy if I have to also quickly figure my orientation on the map. Leaving it on navigator view is not helpful as it is just a field of unlabeled roads.

Whether it is by design or not I think it is one of the largest drawbacks of TomTom navigator. Otherwise I think it is great.

It would be useful to have both the road you are on, and the road you are to turn on to, both shown in navigator mode.

In navigator view, you can show the name of the street you are on by turning guidance off.
Not ideal but it works. I have mapped one of my ipaqs buttons to switch guidance on/off for this very purpose.

When you're not navigating a route, the Navigator view shows the name of the road you're now on at the bottom of the screen. You can also set an option to display the compass on screen (in Properties - Navigation tab), which shows your current direction of travel. Not quite what you're looking for, but pretty close...

In Properties - Advanced tab - Map view section there's also an option to "Keep GPS position on screen". Have never tried this, but it sounds like it scrolls the map for you as you move. If so, this could be what you're looking for.

Road names on the Map in Navigator mode has already been introduced in the PalmOS version of Navigator.

Expect this feature to be added to the PPC version when the common engine is introduced in the next release.

Thank's for the comments.

Of course I use the navigator mode most of the time when I'm driving. Sometimes, you just could have a better view and see "longer away", by using the map. Ok, I can use the map at the moment in that way I meant, but if I'm going to south, the map is still "upside down".

If all of you people should use only a paper map, how would you have it in your hand in the car? I think you'll turn it upside down, if going to south, and looking at it in the direction you are going to. So what I was looking for, was a somekind of a "paper map mode" in TomTom 3.

About the "Keep GPS position on screen", makes your position to be in the middle of the screen and it moves the map in the background.

I would have thought most people would use a map with North at the top. I certainly do.

I think you'll find that most people keep the map with North up, would you turn a Road Atlas upside down if you were travelling South?

Actually there has been research on this subject, whether you orient the paper Map North Up or Track up depends on your spacial awareness abilities, the findings were that Males have better spacial awareness and so most keep the map North up whereas females find this more difficult.

And before I get flamed, this is genuine research and not an attack on anyone's ability , male or female, to read a map!

I have seen this research before but thought I would not comment as some females are very touchy on this. My wife turns maps around.

My girlfriend has excellent map reading skills, which she hasn’t had to employ so much since I got TTNav. She always keeps the map North up, and she is brilliant at Ordnance Survey co-ordinates too! Thumbs Up
