Magellan have just introduced a new entry level handheld GPS to their eXplorist range: the eXplorist 310. Although aimed at and priced for beginners the eXplorist 310 is packed with a host of advanced features that will appeal to both the beginner and the expert alike.

The handheld GPS has a 2.2 inch colour screen with a resolution of 240x320. It uses the common AA batteries and has a claimed battery life of 18 hours. As with all the other new Magellan handheld GPS devices this includes features for paperless geocaching.

The GPS comes with a pre-installed world-wide base map which includes complete non-routable road mapping for USA, Canada, Western Europe and Australia. The maps also include water features, land usage and shaded contour relief. You can also extend the map coverage with Summit series maps which can be bought from the Magellan store. I am currently in communication with Magellan to determine exactly what these cover and if they apply to the OS mapping products.

For those of you with a technical interest the GPS is the SiRFstarIII chipset which incorporates SBAS so will give more accurate corrected positions down to 3m when the enhanced data is available. It is based on a 400MHz CPU so has plenty of power. There is also 500Mb of memory for storage of additional maps, tracks, routes and waypoints, all of which can be exchanged via a USB connection.

Priced at £180 it is £120 cheaper than the next eXplorist GPS in the range, the 510. These are recommended prices and a quick search of the internet shows companies selling the new 310 for about £150 so shop around to see if you can pick up a bargain.

The official Magellan Press Release follows:

London, UK - 18th October 2011 – Global GPS brand Magellan today announces the launch of the eXplorist 310. As the latest addition to the eXplorist range, the 310 is a high quality hand-held GPS device which combines high-sensitivity GPS, an intuitive user interface, easy-to-read mapping and unparalleled navigation.

Whether hiking, climbing, backpacking, geocaching, hunting, fishing, mountain biking or sailing, the eXplorist 310 has been designed to allow adventurers to navigate to outdoor destinations worldwide, capture geotagged photos along the way and share their experiences online when they return home.

As the younger brother of the 510, 610 and 710, the eXplorist 310 is set at a lower price point, enabling all outdoor enthusiasts to make the most of this advanced GPS device.

“We’ve seen fantastic demand for the eXplorist range from the UK’s outdoor enthusiasts since its launch, and hot on the heels of this success we’re releasing the eXplorist 310” says Natasha Bartlett-Twivey, Marketing Manager UK & Ireland, Magellan. “The eXplorist 310 has been designed for all levels of outdoor explorer, from the experienced hiker to the novice geocacher which combined with its lower price point makes the 310 appealing to all. With social networks bringing society closer than ever, the device is a great way to plan exciting adventures and to record and share experiences with friends, family and the wide online world.”
