Sygic Aura 11.2

Can we have a bit more news/reviews on the new Sygic 11.2 for Android?

There are not many Android Sat Navs out there, and I've been testing CoPilot and the Sygic 11.2, and I have to say I am really liking Sygic...

In fact, I'm getting to like it better than my old TomTom!!!

Hi Eugene, is this what is now called Sygic GPS Navigation, as its the only one on their site, which I am looking to buy for a USA trip.

Opinions on good/bad points would be appreciated.

It's good, simple enough to use and now allows 3rd party POIs (albeit no .ogg file support yet for alert sounds)

I will, at some point, be doing a fuller review but just not had time as of yet Sad

Prior to the latest upgrade its estimate of transit times was rubbish and this appeared to lead to some silly route selections. In the limited time I have used it since the upgrade the transit times seem reasonable and I have not had any noticeably odd routes.

I think that for the price it appears to offer a fairly good product but if you have a problem or question then their support forums seem to be quite poor. However I got even more frustrated with TomTom before I gave it up for Sygic.

Not sure if the Live Traffic updates are worth the extra cost it but am keeping that under review. They are evidently rubbish in Holland.

Speed limit information is not bad but don't rely on it (certainly not in the southern USA!).

I will be interested to see what happens on map upgrades. In terms of; how often they come along; how we become aware of them; how we obtain them; and what, if anything, they cost.

If you have any specific question then I will try and give a sensible response.

Oh and if you have a Samsung Galaxy S2 then you had better hang on for a bit and see if they can get it working reliably on the phone.

You can indeed add sound files for alert (alarm warnings for speed cameras!)

I have a number of personal ones installed already Very Happy

LostMike. I think Sygic support is very good. Emailed them several times and got replies within 24 hrs that worked for me.

As to updates, well I bought MM9 originally for my Hero, and then got a free upgrade to MM10, with new maps. And then when I changed to the Sensation in August I got another free upgrade with to Sygic GPS with new maps (that took an email to support that was replied to with full instructions and new product code within 2 hours). And in September I got another free upgrade via the Market with new maps. Can't say fairer than that.

Eugene 7 - can you tell us how you have got sounds on there - other than the standard farm yard bells etc.? Are they ogg files you are installing

peterc10, yep - oog files placed in the Aura/Res/Sounds folder.

Works perfectly!

OK guys I think I need some help.

I downloaded the camera database in .txt format and converted them to .upi format. I did that because I have a batch conversion programme that does that all in one go (thanks ScareyMonkey for that).

I then followed Sygic's instructions and created an Import folder myself and put the .upi files in that along with their bitmaps. I also downloaded the voices in .ogg format and put them in the sounds file as suggested by Eugene 7. Then when I opened Sygic the import widget opened and run and reported that all of the POIs had been imported. And when I check in the list of POIs sure enough they are all listed, along with their icons.

I have enabled them to give me a warning as I drive along in settings, notifications and sounds. I ticked the enable sounds box. Then I chose Points of Interest and chose custom POI. Then for each one I set up a warning distance and a PGPSW sound. When I chose the sound it played. After that I went to Settings, Map View then clicked on Points of Interest and enabled them all.

So all well and good? Nope. The problem is that none of them show on map view and none of them show or warn me when I am driving along.

What have I done wrong and what more do I have to do to get these to work please?

Does the system have a 'Set Position Here' option so that I could test a US map when still in UK before travel?

Not quite sure what you mean by "set position here" Alan but I set up some test runs in the USA before I went and all seemed OK. It also worked fine in the US when I got there apart from a fairly patchy speed limit correlation.

Yep, you can set-up any route in advance, with any start/end and way points...

All with GPS off Very Happy

Peter, I used the new POI Converter from Sygic, and the .csv files from PocketGPS.

This has worked fine for me, although I made new 88x88px icons for the speed cameras (not sure you need this, but the smaller ones were too small for me in the pop-up warning when near the SpeedCam).

Eugene, thanks again for that. I tried it and now it works fine. I see what you mean about size of icons though. Having said that the Sygic instructions just say they have to be square and give 100 x 100 as an example. They also say that if the icon is too big or too small it will be adjusted by the app - but that appears wrong. But they said it would work if I used .upi files and they were wrong on that too!

Any chance of you pming please with a copy of the larger icons you have made - thanks

MaFt - can you make a note please that Sygic GPS (new name for Aura) can now use .ogg files for warnings - instructions as per Eugene's previous post, and they work fine.

One final question for Eugene or anybody else. When you want to update the database do you just put the new rupi files in the import file? Do you need the bmp files again, and do you then have to set up all the warnings again?
