With all this talk of heat waves this weekend - I am sure Plymouth City Council are in for some stick (near bottom of article) -

I'm sure you're not holding them up to be sniped at. But they shouldn't be getting stick for it.

Firstly, in the south, standby merely means they will have a roster for drivers to call out if necessary (up north, they usually have all the workers stop mending potholes and sit in the depot by the gritters and ploughs ready to go, because they'll need to go any day now). They didn't organise the listings yesterday, they've had it on tap for quite some time. The gritters will have been serviced a month ago.

Secondly, when bad weather hits them, if they haven't got a roster "standby", they really will get stick - the usual comments about "wrong type of snow/ice" "How did they think the year might develop? Couldn't they imagine any bad weather?"

In fact, for councils like Plymouth, "Winter Maintenance" is a real problem. It snows down there maybe once every seven years approximately and it's impossible to cover for that wide a distribution - if they downed tools on 1st October and moved over to Winter Standby, they'd get blasted for potholes whilst they sit idly in the gritters. If they get a severe frost on 2nd October and all the workers are down the pub and can't drink and drive, the public would be up in arms.

You are right I wasn't - it is October and even though weather is more like July/August next week it could change very fast to extremes the other way, so any council (and road users) should now be into autumn/winter mode for roads
