What are the differences between the 70 and the 8450?
Do they both have real time traffic updates? Are the maps just UK and/or Europe?
Any help or info would be appreciated

Hi Keith,

One basic difference between the 8450 and the 70 is that the 70 is in the newer range. However both are going to be upstaged by a new set of devices from October, with a greatly revised user interface. So they'll both soon be old hat!

Navigon (now part of Garmin btw) are one of the companies who try quite hard to offer software upgrades to bring the previous range models into line with the new ones as resources and hardware compatibility permit (at a price of course!) but this is more likely to be offered to the just-been-outdated models (eg 70), rather than earlier ones (eg 8450). No guarantee of course.

The 8450 LIVE and the 70 LIVE both have Live Traffic (and others such as weather, Google search) Services, and both have European maps. There is anotherr big difference here though; the 8450 Live has a separate plug-in module for Live services, whereas the 70 Live has an inegrated chip in the satnav itself.

For more detail (there are a lot of functions offered) look at the Navigon website (UK or International) The Products page will give you a lot of info on all three ranges models (the new range models go under the banner of 'Navigon Flow'). A look at the recent press releases on the international site is useful as well.

Also, you'll find quite a lot of discussion in the Navigon threads on PGPSW - as with TT, Garmin, etc, of course, people tend to moan about problems more than they eulogise about how good they are. But you'll find useful stuff in, say, the threads about the 70 and the 8450 etc models.

Good Hunting. Be interested in what you decide.[/i]

Hi David
Thank you for your comments, which will prove to be very useful when the times come to buy a new PND.
I have a TT540, at present with the HD Traffic, but my subscription runs out in Dec so i'll be looking to upgrade them. However i'm not that impressed with the TT 1000 & 1005, which would be the next step forward for me should i decied to stay with TT, but It would appear to be still plauge with problems even now. Rolling Eyes

It will be interested to see the new models that Navigon bring out next month as it could that its time to kick TT into touch once and for all and move on.

Hi Keith,

Yes, I think your 'wait and see' policy is the best one!

One difference I forgot to mention, given it was one of the much commented-on issues with TT's latest releases, is that user POIs CAN be input directly to the 70 (up to 10,000), but they CANNOT be input to the 8450 without a 3rd party add-on costing about £20. In both cases PGPSW camera files can then be loaded, if you use them (but not all of them to the 70 as they exceed the limit).

Still, all academic if you are happy to wait ... Wink

Thank for the info David.
When you said about the 3rd party add-on for the 8450, i'm guessing that the £20 is just a one-off payment.

Will be interesting to see what new models Navigon bring out, more so as their now with Garmin

Hi again Keith,

In connection with a point in my earlier post, Navigon confirm on their Facebook page that they will be providing a 'Navigon Flow' UI software upgrade in due course for the 8410, which is '1 down' from the 8450 (it does not have Live Services). I would have expected therefore that they will also provide it for the two Live devices you were asking about.

As they will no doubt be concentrating on any teething issues with the new range, I guess these compatibility upgrades may be several months down the line. If they maintain their previous pricing on such upgrades, you would be looking at probably £70-80 for it.

Cheers David,
I'll lookout for this when the time comes to buy.
At present i still like the look of the 70 series.
Looked on the Facebook page and theres refernce to a 92 Premium Live - i take it that could be a future release.

You are right, Keith, the 72 is one of the new range being introduced.

I agree with you about preferring the 70 Live over the 8450 - I held off even from its other companion (20, 40, 70 (non-live)) models for quite a few months because I wanted the 70 Live itself, which was released quite a bit later, the only one with the Live services on an integrated chip. You'll need to check the specs carefully as well, as the models are being released over time, before you decide which one is right - buying too early would have been a VERY big mistake for me!

BY THE WAY - the initial releases of the new models do NOT support user-input POIs currently. It can only be hoped that this IS a temporary restriction and not a permanent reversion to Navigon's original anti-user-POI stance.

But unfortunately there is no workaround with the latest range either, that I know of, because the 3rd party software mentioned earlier (which is POI-Warner by navigating.de, Version 3) does not work properly on devices running MN7.6 or later (the most recent two range releases), and there are still no plans for a non-german-language version of Version 4, which DOES work, at least on the previous range (though that supports direct user-input POIs anyway).

So, for the time being at least, it should be assumed that PGPSW cameras, etc., cannot be loaded on the device range just released.

That's some useful information to know.

I saw the 92 Live on Amazon but not on the Navigon site. Not sure why though.
