Wire one of these in behind the dash.

I thought that would be some fancy thing, and not what I'd done, but that is exactly what I used, and it works just fine. Funny how the simple solutions are easiest.

Easy to get hold of from your local Maplin store see Here when you plug the charger in to the socket tape it in place with some PVC tape to stop it vibrating out while driving especially if you hiding it under the dash.

If you think you might need more than one socket Maplins also do a number of options with up to four outlets in a single housing to hide behind the dash (which is what I have got) - Mike

thanks, but i want to get rid of the lighter thing all together, its just too big.

what i may have to do is buy a normal one and dismantle it, remove what i guess will be one IC and a couple of resistors, and remount them

Thats making a whole lot of work for very little gain IMHO, sure it can be done but be aware the output cable contains three wires, one of which is a voltage feedback wire, if this breaks it will fry your TomTom, the wires are at best fragile where they attach to the PCB and to be honest they need the strain relief and moulding of the ciggy plug to keep it all intact.

If its buried behind the dash what does it matter about the size/ looks of the plug? - Mike

Using standard kit also means that they can't dodge blame for anything. If you open and hack their parts, then that's what broke it isn't it?

Sorry, late on the scene... But there's always this from TomTom themselves. Does exactly what you want, I think.
