It turns out that these directives have been refined & replaced over the years (as you might expect), such as HERE in 2005 and HERE in 2008

They define standards to be used for diagnostics, but they never use the phrase OBD-II (or OBD2). Colloquially, they seem to be referred to as EOBD, but the actual directives just talk about specific standards (eg ISO 15765-4), that define the comms. protocols and fault codes involved. With respect to what is monitored, the phrases "Stage 1 OBD" and "Stage 2 OBD" get a mention.

So, in terms of European vehicles, "OBD-II" compliance, as such, is just coincidental (OBD-II being an American definition of a similar system) ...
...if you really want to know if a given tool/accessory is compatible with the vehicle, you might need to check at that lower, 'ISO' level.

With regards to EcorouteHD compatibility, the Garmin US site just says, ring this toll-free number if it doesn't work, and we'll refund you. I couldn't find any equivalent statement on the Garmin UK site.

I did find a list of supported protocols:

  • J1850 VPW
  • ISO 9141-2
  • J1850 PWM
  • KWP2000 (ISO 14230)
  • CAN (ISO 15765)

The major cost of professional test equipment, apart from the laptop, is the cost of licence fees from the software writers to the individual vehicle manufactures.

One of the first decisions when starting that kit is to select which make and model you are connecting to, hence the need to update it regularly, in some cases the software can send test signals to the car and make a decision based on the replies it receives.

It does give access to much more than emissions and fault code resets and not all manufactures are prepared at any cost to make the codes available.

The more makes and models you want to address the more it costs.

There are more than 10 different types of interface protocols between the vehicle and equipment mostly using the same type of connection socket.

Actually cheap Chinese hand held code readers cost about £15 and for £75 to £115 you can buy a clone of a full dealer diagnostic unit for use with a laptop. Reading all parameters and accessing all areas of the ECU and accessory control unit. And I do mean the real thing although the intellectual property rights legality is fuzzy.

I'm not coming at this from the sat nav end but from the OBD-II perspective. My interest is diagnostics and this device is interesting for its Bluetooth link to a visual display in the car. It is expensive for what it does and will only work on post 2001 petrol and 2003 diesel cars. But for car enthusiasts it is a boon to have instant access to a range of performance monitoring readouts and will appeal but it is not likely to be much use to sat nav specialists if it doesn't contribute anything to routing and since it works in real time, it can hardly predict anything ahead from real time engine data. So for every sat nav geek who hates it, there will be a car tuning nut who likes it. Probably not what Garmin had in mind!

i purchase this some time ago and it is nothing but a add on clock for revs speed and so on but will give you info on some faults???

however some car will no longer work with this device example are works fine with every on on my family cars no problem. I got a new car 2011 and it will not allow it to work??? so i checked it with a scangageII works fine so the car is blocking this device so i think that you will have to take it to the dealer for the fault's to be fixed (ripoff if it just a misfire (bad plug) they will still charge you £80.00 for looking at it for a £4.00 part)

any way if you have a BMW 520m-sport(07) Citroen saxo (99) peugeot (01) it will work ok as i have tested it, maybe more people can add more info here.

but if you have a Citroen C3 (11) it will not work at all.

Can this still be used in conjunction with a bluetooth phone so you have voice dialling?
I'd like one as it looks very nice and just gives an extra "techno" factor in the cockpit....
Besides, i've just paid 400 for a bluefin so 80 quid for a DTC reader and real time engine monitor is cheap!!! Mine will be permanantly mounted..

Do you want to use the Garmin as the hands free for you phone as well as having the engine diagnostics active via the EcoRoute HD accessory, if so it works fine.
I take it the Bluefin has "chipped" the ECU and doesn't need to be connected to the OBD-II port in the car at all times to be effective - Mike

Correct Sir.
So long as i can use the hands free facility whilst having the gauges and real time engine info then thats spot on.
Yeah, the bluefin doesn't need to be connected, it can also read DTCs' and immobilise the engine but its not a cheap (though 270 BHP doesnt half put a grin on your chops) piece of kit. I think its good value and a nice gadget.
Also, im now the pleased owner of a 3790t...

I will go and see what the Garmin does when reading and displaying engine information when a call comes in as I have never tried that, be back in ten minutes with an answer!
The Garmin is fine for phone call support with the EcoRoute HD connected but I have never tried answering a call with gauges displayed - Mike
