Its been a while since I used the machine.
I put in 3 brand new Energizer batteries and set off on an epic cycle ride. We did Bowness on Solway to Tynemouth (101 miles) in a day.
I forgot to stop the Log when we got to the end because i was more interested in the pint that was waiting in the pub!! Luckily the device ran out of battery. This logged 9.5 hours of ride time and 14.5 hours actual time. Is this a reasonable time to get out of some new, "Long lasting" batteries?
Whats the best usage youve had and with what batteries?

I thought I'd seen some battery life claims by the manufacturer somewhere, but I can't find them. So much depends on what power-save settings you're using, and whether the screen display is on all the time or not. When Darren Griffin reviewed the device a while ago, he got about 14 hours out of a set of lithium batteries - but didn't specify under what precise conditions. With that as a yardstick, your experience doesn't sound too bad.

Mine came with a LiPo rechargeable battery - which is all I have ever used, but I've never had it on for long enough at one go to exhaust this battery, so I don't know how long that would last in extremis. If you don't have one, it may be worth considering because you can soon spend a lot of money on throw-away lithiuim batteries.

Battery insertion and removal is one of the weak points of the device, in my view. Satmap place great store by the fact that you can operate the device with gloved hands - and then provide a silly little plug which needs tweezers to put in and out. They advise always carrying spare batteries - but there's no way I would want to remove the LiPo battery and insert the battery carrier in the field. Maybe swapping one set of disposable batteries for another wouldn't be too bad - but you'd then lose the benefit of having a rechargeable battery!

I got the LiPOl unit last year and then they were claiming 22 hours then.
I actually managed 18 hours in Feb this year over three days on the hill. Two of those days were running a GPS course. I had the screen going off after 30 seconds. No other power saving used. Usually have N up, but demonstrated track up a few times.

Hi there is a thread on here somewhere that colated a number of users reports on battery life - about a year ago. It would be worth hunting down.

Using all the power saving options I could muster, and screen at 40% brightness, I got 22 hours out of my Li Poly and have found the Energizer Li AAs to be the same.

I tested recently using the unit in hibernate mode, again using maximum energy saving options. The unit continued to work for 4 days as Satmap claim. Note though that the unit was kept on a windowledge so stationary for the test. I returned to scroll around the unit every few hours (to try and simulate real world conditions a little) during which time it aquired signal within 10 to 20 seconds.
