Although I've heard mention of a proposed trial, this article is the first time I've seen anything in writing for flashing amber traffic lights.

I'm not sure how well this will work because an increasing number of motorists seem to have forgotten what the Highway Code says about flashing amber at pedestrian crossings....and that's in the Portsmouth area Laughing Laughing

Whilst I agree about the abilities of many motorists, this is used extensively in other countries and works well.

Another solution I like is the turn left on red where you can filter but must give way. That works very well.

Why not just switch them off so the junctions works just like they probably did before some doo gooder unnecessarily decided that they need T lights. Very Happy

You're right - I know places where traffic flows better when the traffic lights fail.

Better synchronisation would work wonders, but I'm getting far too cynical and good traffic flow wouldn't encourage people to leave their cars at home

To really jam up the traffic what you need is a roundabout with traffic lights on it. One local to me has just been converted so that it now has traffic lights and a Pelican crossing! Traffic queues where previoulsy (when it was a roundabout without traffic lights) traffic flowed freely.

Wouldn't it be better, when the lights flah yellow or are switched off, to give way to traffic coming from the right. We're already used to that with mini/roundabouts. Out of here
