Power useage with CamerAlert

I don't know about other android phones but I have noticed the following, on my HTC Desire running 2.2 (Froyo)

If you have the widget POWER CONTROL from android and another GPS on/off widget from HTC and turn the GPS on with one of these widgets but turn the GPS off with the other widget the GPS appears to switch off but looking deep into the system it can be seen the GPS is still on and receiving readings, just not using them for anything, but using a lot of power.

It doesn't always have this effect but often does. The pattern seems to be random (or I've not figured out what yet) but the best solution I have found is only use the power control bar for switching the GPS, WiFi & BT and do not use any other widgets that control these devices.

By only using the power control I've had a better battery life.
