I use the UK database on a smartphone - no problem. The system prompts me to download an updated database whenever this is relevant.
I go to France next week.
Two queries arise.
1. Is the use of such a database still legal in France?
and
2. How do I select download of the Euro/French database?
I can find no option to do this.
Thank you

From the AA Website:-
The French Embassy gives the following advice regarding use of radar detectors in France.
Under articles L413-2 and R413-15 of the French 'Code de la Route' (highway code), it is strictly forbidden to have such devices in cars in France, regardless of whether or not they are in use. Penalties can include fines of up to €3,000, confiscation of the device and of the vehicle.
This legislation does not apply to satellite navigation systems (SatNav or GPS). These can tell motorists only the location of fixed speed cameras, data which is already in the public domain.
Download the GPS database from here
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras&referer=SideBar
Select your GPS device i.e TOMTOM and the type of cameras below, ie
EUR - Consolidated by type.
Hope that helps!

Many thanks for that MPW99. The AA quote is reassuring.
Regarding the download however, that is not quite so simple, I fear.
According to the website table the download for a smartphone has to be directly to the smartphone, and I can find no way of selecting what download is required.
Can this be specified on the website? I saw no sign of any way of selecting this, unless, perhaps, one selects everything?
Further comment appreciated.
Thank you.

Can you just confirm whether you are using the normal database download or the "CamerAlert" stand-alone app. (for iPhone or Android)?
If it's the normal database, what smartphone is it and what navigation software? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

And if, as I suspect, you are referring to our CamerAlert app (it would help if you could make this clear), then the database it uses is our world-wide database, there is no need to do anything as it already has the data for every country we cover. _________________ Darren Griffin |

So he IS using CamerAlert APP, not database downloaded from the website.
So the answer is, as Darren says, all the data is there in every download/update and you can download/update any day you like (not just the Wednesday update announcement). You can download/update whilst you are abroad too, if you can stand the roaming data charges, or find a nice free wi-fi point. _________________ Dennis

Apologies for the delay in response.
I. frankly, do not know which database I am downloading - I didn't know there was a choice!
The one I use is the one which my Samsung Galaxy Android tells me that I should download when I fire up the 'Camera Alert'app, which is updated weekly, normally.
Reading the responses it seems that I am, in fact, downloading the all-embracing database, which is good, thank you.
My concern arises because I seem to recall that I had to make a decision when I first started, although I cannot find my way back there now!
I will hardly need to update during the fortnight I have in France, but thanks for the warning.
On the other hand there is free WiFi on offer just about everywhere one might stay, in France, bless them.

Incidentally, although I have ticked - notify me when replies are posted, no such notification has ever arrived.
And - Yes - I have checked my Spam! |

CamerAlert is indeed updated weekly on Wednesdays (although you happen to have posted in the one week for a long, long time when the datbase administrator is away, so there wasn't an update this week).
But on Android and iPhone, the updates are also available Live, on the fly, whatever you call it. Simply choose the cog thing at bottom right, then on the next page Manage Cameras, then next page Download database and it will bring you the very latest situation as at the time you download (just make a mental note before you download of the number of cameras on your device and then afterwards and it'll be different). I often do a fresh download before I set off each morning. _________________ Dennis

There is a choice for the 'database only' subscribers who use a satnav, but you use CamerAlert, which is our smartphone app, it's a subtle distinction but important.

There is no choice, CamerAlert users always get the full database, the only time you have to choose is if you use our database on a satnav device and download data manually.

If the option is ticked, and you have the correct email address set in your profile then the issue has to be at your end. Some ISPs block spam at the gateway as well as the client. You would need to ask your ISP for assistance with this. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Many thanks, one and all, for all that.
Doceuan is now a happy bunny!
I see, from the email I have just had, that no more emails will be sent unless I respond to that one.
I am not sure, now, why I didn't respond to one some days ago, but it explains the lack of further notifications.
More importantly - bearing in mind the French threat to ban speed camera warnings made earlier this year -
I presume that has been suspended, or abandoned?
If it were brought in, would French cameras be deleted from the download, or made optional in some way.
I recall responding to a questionnaire on this subject some time ago.
Thanks.

Ah how we love the French and their marvellous ability to follow only those laws that suit them
The current situation is typically muddy as hell. It appears to have been put on hold whilst they discuss it with those French companies whose business is speed cameras.
But, even if it is imposed, it doesn't stop us offering the data, and if this does happen, we will instead have an option for users to choose EU data with or without the French cameras, and for CamerAlert we will look at an option which will allow users to opt-in/out of this data. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You don't have to actually respond/post a message, just make sure you use the link in the email to go view the topic _________________ Dennis
