| Garmin use to have a program called xImage that could load a different start screen etc. Not sure if they still have it on their web site or if it will work with the latest units. |

From a quick Google for "change the splash screen on garmin 1490"
| Quote: | 1 - Turn on the Nuvi
2 - From home screen click settings
3 - Click display
4 - Click "Change" beside splash screen
5 - Choose any JPEG already listed on your Nuvi or SD card
For best results resize your image to be either 320x240 or any size ratio of 1.33 (such as 1024x768, i.e. divide the length of the image by the height). If you don't use a 1.33 aspect ratio your splash screen will be cut off at either the bottom or sides. |
I think that should work for your model. |

There is no change under display settings in that menu! I've tried the xImage and that wont recognise the device! 
Just had a go again, and you go into the picture folder and display a picture then push i button on left, it asks if you want that displayed at the startup screen.

I just bought a 1490 and if you load an image into the picture viewer then click on that image, it gives you a box to tick for the image to used on start up
