Todays Leicester Mercury:
A man was killed and five more injured when a driver took a wrong turning in thick fog on a dual carriageway.

The driver survived the smash, which happened when he turned into two lanes of on-coming traffic on the A46 in Leicestershire.

He has apparently told police he was following instructions given by his satellite navigation system when he turned south into the northbound carriageway at the Six Hills junction.

The collision happened at about 5.10am yesterday.

He said: "The Audi came out of the Six Hills turning and headed south on the north-bound carriageway. The driver has told us he was following his sat nav."

Edit:Further info added

Well that excuse won't wash with the police or CPS. He ought to be charged with causing death by dangerous driving but even if he is convicted, the sentencing is rarely sufficient IMO.

Why causing death using a vehicle as the weapon is treated so lightly I will never understand. If you walked through a crowd swinging a golf club and killed someone you could get 10yrs but drive like an idiot in a car and you may get 6mths if you're unlucky and more often than not, a suspended sentence.

It shouldnt pass as an excuse, This junction is well posted with Dual Carriageway/give way signs on the approach and in the central reservation and no entry signs on the north bound carraigeway, This Junction was improved many, many years ago prior to the safety cameras era with the cross roads staggered due to being an accident spot on the very straight Leicester to Newark dual carriageway road following the Old Roman road route.
