Did you try Mike's suggestion?
Quote:
Put the card in the TomTom and switch the device on, let it boot then turn it off again, put the card back in the reader and try to update the software again, if Home is happy the software is of the latest standard you can try the LMG next - Mike

Thanks Anita, I've realised that I didn't quite read Mike's recommendations correctly. Having taken the card out, inserted it into the TomTom, booted the device & switched it off again. Removing the card and putting it back into the reader I found that Home was able to recognise it again.

My next query concerns the latest version. Mike suggested that it was 9.058.

Yet after its one and only update, if I go to Manage GO and select the application details listed against "My Device" it shows a version number of 9.053 and when I try to update again (the suggestion being that I may need to run through this process a few times in order to get fully up-to-date), Home states that there are "No items available".

The Home application regularly shows incorrect data when it comes to version numbers, you need the card in the device, switch it on and then see what the version is using the device (NOT Home).

The latest is 9,058, the version you report to have (albeit via Home) did exist but was never released to the public so I doubt you actually have 9,053 installed - Mike

With the card inserted I have just powered up the device - Status & Information - Version Information and it shows the following:-

App 9.053.520930.1, OS 515773
(1023, 19/4/2010)
64 MB RAM (free: 6.9 MB)
GPS v1.2, Boot 5.5259
Map: 'Europe_2GB' v840.2566
Language: English UK

(note I haven't updated the maps as yet - was trying one thing at a time before moving onto the next).

Powering off the device and inserting the card back into the reader, fired-up Home and initiated an update. After entering credentials, and logging in, it checks for a few seconds and comes back with "No items available".

Are the contents of the map folder the only difference between a 550 and a 750?

Have to confess that I'm not certain, but that is how I understand it.

According to the manual the 950 has the EPT (Enhanced Positioning Technology) built in, and this is the only reference to a specific difference between the x50 models.

I'm beginning to think v9.058 has been quietly "vanished".
Its interesting that no one seems to have found a direct download link for v9.058 for the Go550 or 750.

I also think that v9.053 definitely has been available via Home.

@ IanS100 - Correct. The only difference between a 550 and 750 is the map.

That's a relief - as you can probably see, my unfamiliarity has resulted in my chugging along, seemingly encountering some kind of gremlin at each stage, but I think I'm good to go now and at least I'm not going bonkers when it comes to trying to get v9.053. Have just updated my card via Home to v865.3244 of the maps and have taken a Windows Explorer copy of the card.

Thanks Andy (and to everyone who's helped - particularly Mike).

Only one question remaining at the moment - and it's one of curiosity more than anything - when I started the GO750 for the very first time, I was presented with the TomTom splash screen, and a blast of the TomTom 'jingle' (for want of a better description) out of the speaker. Every time since, the splash screen appears by no tune. I'm not particularly worried, but was simply curious.

Glad to hear you got there in the end and sorry for the red herring about 9,058 being the latest Navcore for the 750, its either been pulled or was never issued as I have spent time looking for this version on the servers at TomTom all to no avail.

If you want to hear the drum roll from the TomTom press and hold the power button for about twenty seconds until the device reboots - Mike

Thanks again Mike - your help has been invaluable. Smile

I'm all in favour of forums and spend a lot of time participating on ones relating to my profession (corporate internet security) but I'm normally on your side of the discussion. Its interesting being on the receiving end for a change, but am extremely grateful for your help. I'll start using it next week (as I have the joy of commuting to McAfee in Slough), but it will be more to see how it behaves - given that I've been there a good few times before.

Then I'll sort myself out a PocketGPS speed camera subscribtion and maybe invest in some additional voices for the device from TomTom.

Don't get too carried away... There are many free voices available on the web too.

Also, a little warning. Most people find the comedy ones lose their appeal after a few repetitions of the same jokes!

It was only a month ago I got a refurb 550 and Home updated to 9.058! The only problems I've had are an occasional reboot on start-up, and rerouting taking over a minute.

Mike (Guivre46) Can you find the TOC file on your computer that is associated with the 550/750 Navcore 9,058 as this will contain the direct download URL to the file, e-mail it over using the button under my post if you can find it - This is only out of interest to see if the 9,058 is actually still available - Mike

Andy P, Sent a couple of Navigator Toc files to Mike Alder via email attachment, but cannot link file to you via a PM. Do you want to let me have an email address?

PS have been meaning to say that a week or so back you said a PM was on its way to me, and it did not get through.
