Ok, it's possible that this has been asked before but if so, I missed it.

Is is possible to find out what the internal SIM card mobile phone number is on one of the newer LIVE units without opening up the unit. Assume that Linux shell access is available.

Thanks,
Z.

Interesting question!

Do tell... why would you want to know?

But does it even NEED an actual "phone number".
It's got an IMIE number and a SIM ID number (both visible on the Version information / Network screen) Maybe that is enough?

I've just looked at a couple of my sim cards and they don't have the number on them. But of course when inserted in a phone you can see the number listed.

a) Pure curiosity
b) To see what happens when it's called.

As to whether it HAS to have a number, my guess would be yes, simply for network compatibility. But, I could well be wrong.

Can you? Not on any of my phones.

The telephone number itself isn't stored on the SIM Card (this is how you're able to change phone number without getting a new SIM). The network does the conversion from the IMIE to the "phone number" AFAIK.

By the way when I put my Go940 SIM into a phone, it immediately said "Data only" on screen, and after a while it says SIM card registration failed..

Now, THAT is interesting... Thanks for doing the test. I wonder if the SIM is keyed to the specific IMEI of the TomTom hardware. The IMEI is not held on the SIM as that is hardware device specific. The SIM has its own internal ID, and it's this that is linked to the phone number.

Sorry, you're right about the IMIE - that's the unique identifier of the hardware (the phone or TomTom or whatever).

It's the IMSI number that's stored on the SIM card, and it's THAT which identifies the subscriber to the network.

(Whether that is the same as the "SIM ID" number shown on the TomTom screen I'm not sure)

Well if I put a ANY sim card into my Nokia or Samsung it shows own number, same with my android phone. So its getting it from some where Rolling Eyes

All my phones are sim free. Not sure if that makes any difference, but I would not think so.

Have just tried o2, Virgin, T-Mobile and Orange cards in my android and all show the telephone number. Okay, perhaps this is sent back to the phone when it connects to the network. But being in a place with good network coverage then I cannot try to see if the number is show when there is no coverage when you turn the phone on.

The SIM cards in TomTom PNDs are pure data cards. They only support GPRS (not even EDGE or 3G) and they do not have a phone number.

There is a specific field in the Sim card internal memory to save your own number (as there are for some other network specific numbers)
You provider may choose or not to use it (it can also be updated over the air).

If you have a sim card reader (or on some older phones), it is possible to modify that field, chanaging or deleting that number.

Tomtom simcards are data only cards and part of the Vodafone M2M network

According to this senior TomTom guy (Roy van Keulen, President e-business) talking about their HD Traffic service in the video "The overall proposition needs to work. That is what differs with us from the competition" Surprised Stop it!

That is not completely accurate. Any SIM card will support GPRS, EDGE or 3G. I am currently running a phase 1 GSM SIM (manufactured before GPRS was deployed) in my 3G phone and all data facilities work. The designers to the GSM/3G protocols were careful to make them backward compatible with earlier generations of SIM. As mentioned elsewhere in the thread, the phone number is not directly derived from the SIM, the master copy is held in the HLR of the home network (a copy of the number may reside on the SIM, but is not necessary for normal operation).

It is true that a GSM device does not necessarily have a phone number allocated, and the TT live devices probably do not.

I would be surprised if the TT live devices are not EDGE-capable, I will check my 1005 on a test-rig at work next week.
