Garmn Map76

I have a chance to purchase a used Garmin gps Map76 from a friend of mine. He bought a used boat from a boat dealer a couple of years ago and it came with the boat. He no longer uses it because he got new one as a gift. My question is, due to the fact he doesn't know the ORIGINAL owner will I still be able to download info, maps, etc.? The current owner contacted Garmin and they said it can't be updated because he wasn't original owner.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer, but I'll move this to the Garmin forum section as it might get seen quicker by someone who does!
