BBC News

Quote:
Some 800 more people a year could be killed or seriously injured on the UK's roads if all speed cameras were scrapped, a report has suggested.

Professor Richard Allsop said cameras had offered continuing road safety benefits since they were introduced.

Several councils have decided to scrap their speed camera programmes after the government cut road safety grants.

If the Treasury receive £6 from each £60 Fixed Penalty I'd like to see the breakdown of costs and where the other £54 is going?

They don't actually. Wink What they claim is that 800 more people will be killed or seriously injured. In 2009 there were 26,912 KSIs in Great Britain.

What the RAC are trying to say is that the number of KSIs would rise by 3% if cameras were scrapped. Looks like they were an expensive failure, scrap them and concentrate on getting the unlicensed, disqualified, untaxed, uninsured drivers off the road instead.

Indeed! According to the article, the cameras generated about 100 Million in fines over the year. I don't believe that it costs 90 million pounds a year to run a network of 6,000 cameras. The scamera partnerships must have gold plated taps in their bathrooms. Evil or Very Mad

Following one link in the article, another BBC article in July 2010 says the 100m is in total since cameras were introduced
Quote:
Now, 18 years, 6,000 cameras, and an estimated £100m in fines later, speed cameras could be nearing the end of the road - at least in England and Wales.

Here are some alternative figures: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/8301487/Casualties-continue-to-fall-on-Britains-roads.html

I'm not denying, though, that there will still be casualty hot-spots concealed in these figures.
