Google Aerial Maps - Register For Update Notifications

If you've ever used Google Maps to look at the aerial views of your locality, and commented on how old they may be, then this is for you.

Google have launched a new service that enables you to identify an area of interest, and receive email notifications when the aerial imagery is updated for that area.

It's a nice feature. I know the imagery of my house must be 2 years old because the bright orange kayak that used to sit by the shed is still there. And I sold it in 2008.

So if you want to receive update notifications, head on over to followourworld.appspot.com and register.

Do Google indicate at all what the typical update frequency is? And does it differ between areas (urban/rural)?

Our "new" garage, built in 2005, still doesn't appear on Maps but of course is there on Street View.

Huh? I'm Konfused of Keynsham (and also Dumbo of Keynsham). Doesn't it download any new images when I fire it up? If so, why would I need to be notified it has updated them?

Goes to show what I know (not)! But what I meant was when I fire it up, surely it displays the latest images, so I don't need notification, because I surely can already see that my house now is surrounded by all those houses they've built this last year or two?

Sorry, Darren. I wasn't being off-ish. It's just that when I fire up Google Maps or Google Earth, they both startup at my home. From it, I can see plain as day, the old car park behind our house which is no longer - it has changed into a whole mini-estate of council houses, maisonettes and three storey flats which block our view of the Cotswold hills. GRRR. So, seeing that every time, I'd notice quick as a flash if more up to date images were used. I have worked out from the model of my van and the status of the runner bean plants that Streetview is two years (now 2 and a half) years old for our street.

It does tell you the imagery date in the bottom left hand corner when you zoom in.

And the date can't be relied upon, it claims 2011 for my area yet still shows things I know had gone 2 years ago.

the date on Google Earth and Google Sat is the copy write date and nothing to do with the survey date

Have a look at the bottom left hand corner of Google Earth and you should see the photos date. Further to that you can also click on a green icon in the bar and go back to older photos. Some areas allow you to go back to 1945!
