Just about to buy an Andriod phone.
As I don't know anything about how they work etc, can they all use CamerAlert. And also can they all run navigation software etc.
I see some phones have built in GPS listed in their specs, and some have GPRS only. Whats the difference.
Need help and advice PLEASE.

GPRS is a (slow) data connection for mobile internet. GPS is global positioning system (used for location - same as in satnav etc).
Android has various versions and we have targeted version 1.5 and above for the Android version of CamerAlert. v1.5 was released nearly 2 years ago. A lot of phones were released running 1.5 and never got an official update. The majority of 'modern' Android phones were released with 1.6 but later updated to 2.1. Any new Android phone will be running 2.1 or higher.
Basically, we have tried to cater for ALL Android phones that are still in use. I would be very very surprised to see an Android device with lower than 1.5.

But can an Andriod phone with just GPRS run nav software or not. And are any compatible with CamerAlert running at the same time.
Most of the phones I've looked at seem to have Andriod 2.2 on them.
Sorry to be a pain  but when I've asked these questions (about nav software) in a few phone shops, some have said you need a phone with GPS, and others have said nav software will work with GPRS. But none would do a demo to show me. I suppose the usual phone shop service.
That's why I'm asking here to get some real proper information. |

No, GPRS is a data service - it has nothing to do with GPS. You need a GPS enabled handset to provide location and one with a data service - most likely 3G to provide the data connection for maps etc.
Think of 3G, GPRS, EDGE etc as the network connection. These are needed because Google maps downloads its data over the air, the maps are not installed on the phone.

We support 2.2. You shouldn't be able to buy an Android phone with 1.6 any more.

| One thing to make sure though is that you get data on your tariff as it could get expensive if you have pay as you go data. |
