....and it doesn't take account of drivers who see a camera and hit the brakes even though they are within the legal speed limit. If only all people behaved as rationally as Fellwalker advocates, we'd save a fortune on the criminal justice sytem.

Exactly, I quoted a report. That is entirely different. I'm delighted to hear that you possess cruise control and an uncanny ability to control your speed at all times. If only we were all so gifted. |
But the report in the Cambridge Times did not say that. I read it.
Speed awareness is not a gift, just practice. I'm sure you could do it.

As a driver apparently growing up in the same age as Fellwalker, I can agree with a lot of what he says - I too can "sense" how my speed is doing.
BUT - there are only two people in the whole of this country who can successfully and legally drive by the seat of their pants, by the sound in their ears and the rhythm of the passing telegraph poles, namely Fellwalker and myself. It's a gift only granted to us (and I'm better than Fellwalker, because I can do it without cruise control). It has become a little more difficult since I gave up my Jowett Bradford and my Morris Minor Traveller, but I manage.
Trouble with our speed awareness is that nobody else can do it. So Fellwalker and I need for loads of speed cameras to get all the rest of you off the road.

 I too have cruise control but as you say, it's not very often that the road conditions permit its use.

Yes I've been driving for 40+ years now, and I can sense the speed of my vehicle, but the human body [mine anyway] is not that finely calibrated. In my early cars I could tell from all the clanging and banging fairly accurately what the car was doing. Now I'm hard put to notice small differences. In a 30mph zone, I probably notice about 35mph that I'm going too fast.
Also there are now many more distractions, someone mentioned South Oxhey the other day, I've not managed to negotiate that yet and feel that I've taken account of all the information and traffic lanes that have been put in there, plus in the midst of it a red-light camera that controls lights that you'd think would be synched to all the other controls, but isn't.

There are a few older people out here who remember when the sign that now denotes the national speed limit meant the end of speed limits.
I agree that you can judge your speed, but it was much easier in A Morris Minor or a Ford pop. for one thing it took so long to build up speed.
A modern car is quite smooth no wind noise fast acceleration it is more difficult to keep to the speed you would like to drive at.
Still I bet Fellwalker subscribes to the speed camera database.
On the static cameras. I agree there are a serious number of driver who brake when they see a camera no matter what speed they are doing, even if they are well within the limit. I often pass 50 mph cameras on the A556 between the M6 and M56 at busy time you are lucky to be doing 40 yet drivers still comfort brake before the cameras. |

Nah! And Fellwalker is forgetting that it was 8mph back then (and red flag bloke in front too). I think he means before the 70mph limit was introduced and I was hitch hiking home up north before the M1 was done and double de-clutching to change gears when driving (couldn't afford one of those new-fangled cars with synchromesh gearbox)! My boss used to come back and tell us he'd driven from Leeds back to Essex in six hours - over 200 miles - we thought he must be a real tearaway road hog!

Ford Pop; now that was a car. Two foot gear lever, 3 forward gears, no heater - any speed felt like 70mph.

I know it annoys people but I'm one of the ones who always brake for speed cameras too. Cameras won't take a photo unless your speed is constant....
Cameras only have to be lucky once, we have to be lucky all of the time so better safe than sorry.
