Hey all,
I"m fairly new to the new Garmin capabilities overall. I had an eTrex for years for hunting, and I finally broke down and bought an Oregon 450T earlier this summer, which I use for biking and hiking.

Well, last week I bought a Nuvi 275T because my CoPilot Live 7 on a Dell Axim was acting up, and I've been trying to learn all I can about the the Garmin Tools to work with both pieces of equipment.

I've recently emailed Garmin and asked them about another unlock code for the European City Navigator maps on my Nuvi so that I can put them on my 450T. I haven't heard from them yet, so I figured while I wait, I'll ask some questions here.

First, do the City Navigator maps work well on the 450T? My main purpose will be to use them to navigate city streets on foot while visiting cities on business trips (such as walking from the bus stops to the hotel, finding restaurants, etc.). I don't need it to be routable on the Oregon, but it would be cool if it did.

Second, does anyone know about how much the second unlock code will cost? Just curious, since I haven't heard back from Garmin yet.

Finally, are there any free, LEGAL street level maps for Europe I could use for the 450T instead, that come from safe, reputable sources? I found openstreetmaps, but I'm wary about downloading from sites without knowing their reputations.

Thanks in advance.

CityNavigator maps are routable on your Oregon. Work quite well actually with much more customization possible than on a nuvi. But of course no TTS.

As for the 2nd unlock code, I think it's the same cost as purchasing the map again outright, but without the need to download again. In your case it won't matter tho as the maps on your 275 are locked to the nuvi and there's no method to transfer those to your Oregon. You're going to need to download a copy from Garmin, or purchase the maps on DVD or SD. If I were you I'd probably look at CNNT on SD. You can move that from device to device as needed. If you upgrade your handheld at some point you'll still have access to the CityNavigator maps.

Gator,
Thanks for the info. Garmin did write back and told me I'd have to purchase the map outright to use on the Oregon.

What you told me got me curious, though. If you get the coverage on SD, and can transfer it from device to device, that leaves me to believe you don't lock the SD card to a device. If that's the case, then what's the point of requiring unlock codes at all. I could use it on my Oregon, then take it out, put it in the nuvi, and use it there, too, and back and forth. And if that's the case, then why won't Garmin just give me the unlock code for the maps that I have now.

Furthermore, what's to keep me from cloning the SD card and using it in both at the same time, or even giving it to someone else?

Either I'm confused, or this just doesn't add up !

The clue is in the name of the card. SD = Secure Digital. The content is locked to the card, so whilst you can backup the content elsewhere it's only useable on the original card. Copying to another card will not work.

If you have maps on an SD card you are entitled to use it on any device you like as you can only use it on one device at a time.

I think you can be reasonably sure that Open Street Map is safe. You can use a tool like Mobile Atlas Creator to create a Garmin Custom Map for the Oregon for any areas you want. For the UK, the Ordnance Survey Opendata Streetview is safe - use a tool like MAPC2MAPC to convert the areas you want to custom maps on the Oregon. Given the limits of Custom Maps (100 tiles of 1 MPx) you may need several SD cards depending on how many places you plan to visit.

Jolly,
I just created some maps from Mobile Atlas Creator. That was so simple, once I figured out the setup. I hadn't seen that before. It's so easy, it's not even funny.

Thanks a bunch.
