On the A6 heading south towards Jct5/6 Reebok turn M61 there is a 40mph gatso there with another camera about 6ft in front of it. Painted grey with a gatso label on the back.
Camera looks like a video camera used for monitoring traffic however the lense looks frosted and looks more like a flash.
Any one else come across these and knows what they are?

I've seen these too, and although I'm not 100% sure as I have not seen one trigger, I'm certain that they are an auxilliary flash.

Is this one of the cameras that takes a front and back photo so they can identify the driver?

I saw one a few days back (can't remember where); it looked like an auxilliary flash to me too. The 'device' was mounted in a grey tube, angled down towards the road on the lens side of the camera. The camera was definitely a Gatso, not Truvelo.

That's the one I was talking about, I had a close look at my local one, and the lens being frosted definitely suggests a flash. They are in the wrong place to get a forward snap of the driver.

The Gatso on the A406 at StoNebridge Park just before Staples Corner (GATSO:414@50/GATSO:65105@50has one too.
This view is about 30 yards after the main camera.

Both cameras on the A6 near Bolton have these illuminators mounted in front of them and they appear the same as those in Darrens post above:

Skippy you can rest assured these only snap you when speeeding from the rear and are not forward facing although in this specific installation there is a camera on both sides of the road! - Mike

Googling suggests they are definitely auxiliary flash guns for Gatso cameras converted to digital.

"The sensor in the digital camera is less sensitive than 35mm film, or has less 'latitude' regarding over- or under- exposure. Therefore all the digital-upgraded GATSOs have this auxiliary flash unit placed close to the position where the vehicle will leave the radar beam (where the first photo is triggered) to ensure that the number plate will be readable on the image."
