A friend who's not too computer confident asked me to look at his dead 730.
It working fine until recently he connected it to TomTom Home because he was interested in updating maps. I don't think that he bought any maps but I suspect it's updated the TT and killed it.
I looked through the hard drive of his PC looking for backups prior to the upgrade but there aren't any.
The PC can still see 2G of files on the TT730
When I tried to do a backup it failed due to a corrupt gns/gnsdata
then I did a chkdsk -F h: (I think it was)
this deleted the gns/gnsdata file and now the TT730 will successfully backup but still won't startup
I took the TT730 home and tried a clearflash
the clearflash did it's thing okay but the tomtom still won't startup
I also left it on charge over night using a phone charger that has the same micro usb plug

currently if I press the reset button for 30s I get the hands screen and drum beats and then a picture of a four way junction with cars on it for a few seconds, then nothing

pressing the power button after that gets back to the four way junction pic for a second without the hands then blank

what should I try next? I have a dual boot Debian Linux / Win XP desktop that I can use

thanks for any help

Assuming you've now got a good backup, delete all the files on the unit which are NOT in folders. Do not delete any folders.

Then run Home and select "update". It will then offer to reinstall the operating software.
