Ok, but we know very little about the technology behind this trial as yet. So it's too early to assume it is not capable of detecting motorcycles/trikes.
It's not just powered two wheelers that are permitted to display only rear registration plates

| You're right, Darren, if by that you mean powered THREE wheelers like the Piaggio MP3 and similar (though judging by reports, the Italian Electrics In Wet Weather Syndrome keeps their numbers down.....). |

Indeed, but regardless, we still don't know the technicalities of this system so too early to judge.
But even so, the research shows that it's vehicles that are the cause of the vast majority of KSI's to pedestrians in school zones so the issue may be a red herring in reality in this scenario?

at the risk of going off topic, i disagree

back on topic though, i agree with others sentiments that if 'they' are really after making areas safe then school and hospitals etc are the best places to put average speed cameras. basically any area with a high number of pedestrians who are likely to be not paying any attention...
i also think that road layout has a lot to do with people speeding - some areas just FEEL or LOOK faster (or slower) than they actually are. see this post for some specific local examples - it was a long post and i can't be bothered re-writing it all! there's an example of a road that feels too slow and one that feels too fast... both have cameras on them!

Which will not be affected by average speed cameras.

Absolutely. Intelligent road layouts and street designs can go a long way to improving safety and causing drivers to slow down. And that's not chicanes and speed bumps but suggestions such as removing kerbed pavements, road markings etc. Doing this forces drivers to be more alert and to drive with more care. See here.

I agree entirely, there is more to encouraging drivers to concentrate on the road, than just focusing on reducing speed. One reason speed humps don't work is that the driver focuses on negotiating the hump and excludes other information.
