Hi everyone

Just bought the Dekota 10 as a back up GPS was wondering what maps can be used on the device I think you can use the topo maps by down loading them on to it. What about the OS descovery maps could I down load sections of these to use on it. any help would be very appeiciated.

After much deliberation I bought a Dakota 20 a little while back after locating sources of free maps to use on it - the OS ones do seem rather expensive. They are based on the excellent OpenStreepMap ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/ ), and there are several Garmin distributions from that source. The 2 main web sites I use are http://openmtbmap.org/ and http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm, and they can be installed on your PC for use in Garmin BaseCamp/MapSource or you can create Garmin mage files directly and copy it to your GPS. Contours are available as well if you want to add those to the maps you select.

However with just the internal memory to play with on the Dakota 10 I guess you'll be using them from MapSource rather than loading whole country files into GPS storage.

With my GPS I've been able to add and update many local paths and streets in OpenStreetMap to help the project, and would encourage you to do the same if you go down this route.

I've researched this stuff fairly widely and even run GPS sessions for my local Ramblers group based on it, so if you have any further queries then please let me know.

After my post yesterday I've done a quick check on a couple of the country map sizes and it looks as if you probably do have enough storage to upload the complete maps to your Dakota 10 e.g. from http://openmtbmap.org/download/
GB: 256MB, contours 29MB
Alps: 360MB, contours 95MB
