For various practical reasons, I've not bought a tomtom gps kit yet, so am trying to optimise the gps performance I get from my 3gs by other means.

I've tried navigon's suggestion of backing up the 3gs, then restoring it again from scratch.

I've tried turning off bluetooth.

I've tried turning off 3g.

I've tried changing the radio frequencies I transmit at to my car radio.

I've had mixed success. Sometimes I think those measures have improved the signal... but then sometimes I think it might just be in my mind. Smile

I understand the gps receiver in the 3gs is better than the one in the 3g... but I'm still not 100% happy with the performance in the 3gs.

My main gripe is lag. Especially where there is a junction or a roundabout or a corner. I'm guessing the 3gs isn't giving a reliable signal to the satnav app, so it is unable to show progress in a smooth way.

I currently have the 3gs placed on a griffin roadtrip. That's a nice arrangement, as it just slots on top of the flexible arm. However, I expect it doesn't get as strong a signal as it might if I stuck it on the windshield. It's a pity the 3gs doesn't take some kind of aerial input.

I'm debating getting a tomtom mount if only to get a better gps signal. However, I don't really want a windscreen mount... and I don't have the brodit mount for my car yet.

Has anybody tried any snake-oil gps optimization of their 3gs? If so, what worked, and what didn't?

Thanks!
