Whatever you decide also worth installing MalwareBytes AntiMalware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) which is a free scanner. Doesn't run all the time like your Anti Virus so it doesn't bog down system resources.

Quick Scan usually takes between 3-15 minutes to check the most likely areas of infection.

Full Scan can take 1 - 3 hours depedning on the amounts of data you have.

Several detection updates a day and the program engine will update itself if a new version is released (unlike Spybot and AdAware).

Free version is fine as you don't need auto updating and real time scanning otherwise it'll clash with whatever Anti Virus you have running.

I've been using MalwareBytes AntiMalware on both computers for some time so agree with the recommendation.

Installing Kapersky went OK on my XP machine; I just had to uninstall AVG and on it went, no problem at all. On my laptop (Vista) the installation hangs and I get a message telling me to uninstall McAfee - which I don't have installed (at least not as far as I can tell). So back to AVG for now. Sad

Run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe (1.3 Mb Download) on the PC and it'll remove all traces of McAfee products from the PC. Reboot and you are good to go.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK*

(* I've used it on dozens of PCs over the years without problems)

Thanks Paul, that worked a treat. Thumbs Up

No idea where the McAfee came from - definitely not installed by me!
