pocketgpsworld.comThings have been happening so fast this year that already it is time to start packing for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. PocketGPSWorld has been attending the Expo for the last 5 years ever since it moved from Cannes and through the name change from 3GSM. MWC is far more representative of it's current focus.

I am sure that the Americans would disagree but MWC is now the largest and most influential expo for cellular technologies. Encompassing the entire range of disciplines from network infrastructure to handsets, and network management to phone apps all you ever need to know about wireless communications is in one place.

In the time that we have been visiting MWC we have seen the emphasis move from hardware to software. There is now an entire hall dedicated to Applications, and "App Planet - The Centre of the Apps Universe" is now a theme running across all four days of the congress with a special developers day on Thursday 17th Feb.

The Android OS has always had a strong presence at MWC as has the Apple iOS. Interestingly in true Apple fashion the company has never exhibited at the show, whereas every Android partner has. Most prominent of these partners is, of course, Google who will have a huge representation both on the show floor and in hospitality suites.

From the navigation standpoint there will be lots to keep us busy from the main manufacturers such as HTC and Nokia, accessory providers like Brodit and Gear4, software and mapping from ALK, Navteq, TomTom et al, and component providers like CSR (merged with SiRF). It looks like it will be a busy week for me and Darren next week.
