I have a 530 which we will be taking to the US next summer. As TomTom have a map sale at the moment it makes sense to get it now, but which one? I know that I only get the choice of the smaller one if I put in the device model, but as I plan on getting an 8GB card I wondered if it would be better to get the larger version. When I put in 930 I get the option of both North America v8.40 1767.8 MB and 1617.4 MB maps so what is missing on the smaller one?

If it's better to go for the larger one how can I download that one when it detects my device is a 530 through TomTom Home?

I suppose if you never plan to visit Canada, then you can just select United States and save a couple of pounds.

On the other hand, the 2 versions of the North_America map (which does include Canada) are differentiated by a larger poi database in the uncondensed NA version (the one that fits on a 930) and some non navigational graphic details such as better rendering of rivers, curves in roads, that kind of stuff.

You won't be offered the larger NA version for your 530 in any case. TomTom used offer up a map not meant for your specific device but that doesn't work anymore.

That said, if you DO want to get the NA map for your unit (the condensed version will be offered) but want the larger poi database, well.......some have said that copying the large poi.dat files from an uncondensed NA map to the condensed map will work as they are compatible.

I guess it's inappropriate for me to confirm that is indeed true .... Twisted Evil

BEWARE! You can't any more....
You used to be able to get the larger map by telling the website that you had a different model, but some time ago TT changed Home to stop it installing.
This meant there was a flurry of people who had BOUGHT the map, but couldn't use it and had to beg TT to give them the smaller one instead.

EDIT: Sorry dhn, somehow I managed to read your reply but miss the paragraph where you said exactly the same thing... Embarassed

Thanks guys! Saved me a lot of hassle.

Is there any point me getting an 8GB card then? Do I even need a card and if so could I get away with a 2GB one?

Unless you want to delete the Europe map, there won't be room to fit the America map on the internal memory, so you will need some sort of SD card.

But the only reason for getting a big one would be if you want to add lots of mp3 music tracks for the Jukebox player

Thanks for that Andy. Smile

I know it's best to get a class 6 card and I usually get Kingston so I will probably go for a 4GB one which looks like their smallest.
