SatNav? Not impressed

So several months on from SatNav applications being released, and we still don't have a SatNav app that can...

(1) Update with a decent traffic service e.g. HD Traffic
(2) Import custom PoI files e.g. PGW

At the moment I find myself switching between Traffic TV and a speed camera app, but this is hardly optimal. If I need to drive in an unfamiliar area I want all these three services combined.

Mostly a rhetorical question, but why are software writers not stepping up and combining both the SatNav features, and these two important features as well?

tbh I'm thinking of getting a TomTom of some description with Live services.

Yup, it's not rocket science and it is hard to understand why no-one has offered custom POIs as yet.

Despite their claims, it is not prohibited by Apple and it is perfectly possible to add files to an app as other iPhone apps already allow.

Navmii use our database but they don't offer Traffic. Navigon offer Traffic but not our database.

TomTom, well they're TomTom and do as they please, they are unlikely to want to make using our data easy on the iPhone.

We have a good relationship with Navmii and so hopefully we can steer them towards the ideal app in time.

personally i think it's a profit-making / waiting game. if they release a full bells and whistles satnav app then what else can they do to make money?

so everyone releases the most basic app they can get away with and others add features etc.

i reckon on about another 5 or 6 months (i.e. after the apps have been around a full year) the companies will release new apps (note NEW and not updates) with some of the extra features (eg TomTom PRO - with custom poi support) so they have a new product to sell. those who bought the original app who want the proper features will need to buy a new app.

likewise those who bought old PND's had minimal features - once everyone had one of these they brought out a new device with the new features so you had to pay again. my assumption here is that this is the line they will take...

I can quite believe it, although the iTunes Store does tend to lean more towards free updates than paid upgrades - albeit not impossible with the new store model.

A heck of a way to your customers though.

Also I should add I'm not saying anything else is any better. I don't think TomTom on Windows Mobile had HD Traffic.

I think I might just give up and get a standalone device.
