I`m gutted....
My go 910 has ceased to be , Gorn to meet it`s maker.
I loaned it to my daughter in law for a run. She said it was on the car charger and just died a little short of journey`s end. I`ve tried to charge it overnight but it`s completely dead. I`ve had no battery issues with it before . Is it likely to just collapse without prior warning ? Is it worth getting tomtom to fix it (what are their repair prices like)
I don`t want to get a budget model as the old 910 was a pearl with it`s huge HDD , mp3, pictures, and so on. Any links or ideas would be welcome.

Give the car charger a good sniff test and the unit near the electrical connector on the base, can you smell any burnt odours as it could be the charger has overvolted the device, if this is the case its probably not cost effective to repair - Mike

No smells on the gear so I did a meter test on the charger which is giving 5.1 volts which I`m guessing is ok

You can contact TomTom by phone in the morning to ask about possible charges if they would be prepared to take a look at the device but its going to be rather costly IMHO, their number 0845 161 0009 - Mike

Thanks for that. Assuming it ends up to be too dear, then what is the general consensus about the best model to get which woukld give me the functionality and map detail of the 910 ? I don`t mind the price but do want the best available .

A 940 Live is about as good as you can currently get, add a 16GB MicroSD card to it and it will out perfom the 910 in all but battery run time, if you tow a van or drive a motorhome consider "upgrading" it to use the Fiat BlieMe Navcore 9 and the device really comes alive - Mike

I presume you've tried resetting the device? Or connecting it to a PC?

Oh yes Andy. Done all the usual things. Charge in car, charge on pc, reset ,long and short, stood on one leg and screamed but the screen stays black. really sorry to lose it but hey.
Just as a matter of interest, how long ( open to all comers ) can you expect the life of a TT to be. My son ( international trucker ) not rhyming slang! reckons most of the guys in his fleet change them every couple of years because they pack up with the all day every day use.

Good god !!!! Iv`e just mounted it on the pc , nothing, then I forced it down a little on to the mount, pressed the on button and held it there for a while and the screen came alive , green picture of TT (unrecognised usb device on PC screen) I tried a pin reset while it was live but won`t start again now . But at least it was something... I won`t give up on it just yet. I`ll keep you posted in case it helps someone else in a similar predicament... But I`m warning you 910 , it`ll be the lump hammer next !!

Even gooder God !!! The threat of the hammer did it. Pressed the on button for a long time again and it fired up and working with the PC.
I`ll leave it on charge for the night but I suspect it was the power button all along. Maybe a dirty contact. Not holding my breath but lookin promising . A little put out because I`d justified a 940 to myself Very Happy

A couple of days down the line and she is behaving impecably ! Prior to it`s "death" it had been very erratic in start up for a couple of months since it`s last update, red cross / freeze etc but once started worked o.k. , but I`m starting it up and switching off and tasking it to the full but it`s solid .
Two lessons to be learned here,
a; perhaps I`m a pillock(don`t answer that)
b; never give up on it till the bits fall off.

If you had a PC as "flakey" as mine, you'd remember all sorts of weird and wonderful things can go on before a quick blast on the reset button is called for!
