As will BeThere and you get an ADSL2+ connection (if your exchange supports it).

Very impressed with BeThere, super connection, no throttling, no slowdowns in the evening and great support.

But we're assuming Paul wants to change providers when he really just wants a new router!

On that note I've found Netgear much better than Linksys which used to be my router make of choice. Linksys gone down the pan post Cisco buy out.

Personally i prefer Belkin...

Belkin have some good kit but they seem hell bent on constantly producing kit with unratified speeds which puts me off.

I'd rather a supported/approved speed device.

Hmmm VM will only give me a "free" router if i am on the top package (I'm on 2nd top) which is an extra £11 a month or i can pay £40 for it.

Cheaper on eBay i think. Plus I'll know what I'm buying an should be able to get a N router instead of just G.

WEP is just about OK to put off the 'casual' snooper - but thats all.

WPA 2 is the best at the moment, but I wouldn't say it's 100%
Many routers use WPA -PSK as the standard Home security, and this has been broke. There is software that uses 'brute force' as it's called to break the code.

Hiding the SSID, is not that good either.
There are packets out there for free to use on Linux, Mac and Windows that will 'see' hidden SSIDs.

Best is wired network. But when choosing a password, don't just use a word. Use the 1st, 2nd - 3rd letters of a phrase for example, and stick in a few random numbers or punctuation.

Use the highest level of security that you can WEP (weak) -- WPA (better) -- WPA2 (best).

Don't bother with a complex SSID, they are easy to pick up so it makes no difference.

Switch off SSID broadcast if you can (stops casual observers seeing your Wireless network) but don't worry too much if you can't do this. There are lots of tools out there that can detect non-broadcast SSIDs anyway.

ALWAYS use a strong (20 characters or more) pre-shared key or password so it's more difficult to crack. Make sure it's *randomly generated* string of giberish and NOT any dictionary word or phrase. You don't have to remember it so it doesn't matter if it's complex.

Extra strength is added by including non-alphanumeric characters but you can use a longer one with just letters if you prefer.

My key is 48 characters long, including spaces, funny punctuation and unlikely capitals (admittedly, I really only use those in case MaFt comes sneaking round here). One of my new toys refused to allow me to copy and paste passwords.

It took me at least an hour of serious cursing to type the thing into my new wireless all in one printer with its fiddly keys.

I don't remember it, I have it written on a piece of paper at the side of the PC, same as all my secret IDs and passwords. Blu-tack is a blessing, innit? Laughing

Finally got my WiFi to work with the WAP security which seems to be the highest available with the router my ISP provides.

One main problem with this router is that I cannot get it to work with my FTP program WS_FTP Home. This happens even if I use the cable to connect the router to my pc or wireless. So for now I will just use my normal modem and only power the router up when I use my netbook.

Pocketgps: you may need to set up Port Forwarding for FTP. http://portforward.com/ has a lot of good info.
