pocketgpsworld.comAs some of you will remember, we posted a request a couple of months ago to say we’d be running a PR campaign, and that we were looking for your help in identifying the daftest speed camera locations in Britain.

We’ve had some great responses so far, but we’re still looking for one or two more REALLY outrageous ones to make the story fly, and we’d really appreciate your help one last time. So much so that we’re offering now offering 2 free years of speed camera warning downloads for the best entries.

Here’s what we’re looking for: Any speed camera that is in a truly silly or dangerous location – the more obviously daft the better and if you can take a photograph even better! That’s it.

As before, post your suggestions in the thread linked below. Get your thinking caps on (again) and let’s see what you’ve got..

Gatso:955@50 Heading north on A523 towards Macclesfield, positioned just after a tight right hand bend. Driving a saloon car at the limits of adhesion the bend is so tight you are below the 50mph limit when you go past the camera; maybe in a hot sports car you could just about manage to get a ticket if you tried very hard!!

As you exit the Northwick park Roundabout heading toward Wembley you go past Northwick Park Hospital on your Left Hand Side.

This is a 40MPH Zone, although it is badly signed and so most people still think it's a 30 zone. There is a set of traffic lights and then after the lights the 2 lans converge into 1 lane. There is also traffic joining the road from the hospital at this point as well.
IT IS AT THIS POINT THAT THERE IS A SPEED CAMERA!!
So instead of people looking at the cars around them and trying to get 2 lanes into 1 they are looking at there speedometers and hitting the brakes.
This usually means braking to 20MPH!! (NO JOKE - 7am clear road car in front brakes to 20mph to go past the camera!!)
So not only is it a traffic bottle neck anyway as you are going from 2 lanes into 1, but with people braking to half the speed limit it causes even more congestion!!

This Camera is both a Hazard and a cause of added congestion!!
I understand they might want to put a camera on this road, but not as the 2 lanes are converging!

I have been meaning to complain about this camera since it was first put up, but couldn't be bothered as I knew it would get me anywhere.

Lets see what every one else thinks!

Gatso on A24 London Road heading towards Morden opposite Morden South Rail Station.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=morden&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=14.432157,33.442383&ie=UTF8&ll=51.397037,-0.200372&spn=0.003715,0.008165&t=h&z=17

This was one of the first Gatsos in this part of London and is still in the original location. It is an ideal bend for a Gatso as there are a number of dangers here.

1) A 30 mph dual carriageway on a tight bend

2) People crossing the road between the bus stop and the station

3) Vehicles regularly turning right onto the dual carriageway or turning right out of the dual carriageway into the postal depot.

4) Buses pulling out from the bus stop (the bus laybye was removed but reinstated due to the danger this casued!)

I don't have a problem with measures on approach to this section as traffic is unsighted to dangers and before the Gatso vehicles regulalry speeded through here and I did see accidents including a pedestrian hit at speed.

The problem is the Gatso is after the hazards - not before!
The camera is under this tree with the road markings under the bridge!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=morden&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=14.432157,33.442383&ie=UTF8&ll=51.397029,-0.200382&spn=0.000929,0.002041&t=h&z=19

This means that as vehicles come round the bend at speed they suddenly brake due to the camera, just as they should be concentrating on the buses, pedestrians, postal vans etc.

I presume the camera is operational as it was recently repalced after being burned out.

Know this one well, go past it nearly every day. Just as you describe it. Why it's not 30mph the full length I don't know, and yes the positioning of the camera is a strange one.

Thanks, this is great stuff - keep 'em coming!

And, as 253 has just done above, confirmations are very welcome Smile

I have noticed, on a few occasions, cops with a speed gun outside Broughton Primary School in Edinburgh - fair enough. Friday morning 8.55am rush hour when traffic can hardly move - let alone speed, there they are! You will be lucky to do 10mph!
The most galling thing of all is all the parents parked on the zig zag markings by the level crossing, sometimes double parked and two idiots standing with a speed gun!! It's not speed that is going to kill; it's the lunacy of the law allowing this sort of behaviour of cars stopping, parked illegally etc - while these idiots are hell bent on holding a gun.
