| Hi, I was wondering if there are any plans to support other car maufacturers in the speed camera database - e.g Honda. I am sure that you will have many more subscribers as a result of this as more and more people get in-car systems. It seems silly to have to run 2 systems at the same time - 1 for direction (in-car) and 1 for POI and Speed cameras (e.g. handheld device). |

hi, and welcome to the forums! only took ya 3 years to make a post 
back on topic...: unfortunately it's the other way around. the question should be when will in-car systems catch up with every other satnav system and allow 3rd party poi's to be used!

That's a polititions answer. Answer the question that was asked, not the question you think should have been asked. As a Honda owner, I'm also rather interested in that too. But if I copy my DVD onto another disk, it works for a while (10s of mins) then crashed with a 'Can't read disk' error, so it seems a bit iffy whether mine would work even if we found how to put in our own POIs  |

No it's not. It's the correct one.
PGPSW is a data provider. It's up to Honda and other manufacturers to make sure they have the tools and facilities in their sat navs to utilise the data. Even if you can copy the data onto a Sat Nav DVD if the manufacturer hasn't provided a facility to interpret the data and provide a warning then what use is it and what is PGPSW supposed to do?
Remember it's easy to load the POIs and Speed Cameras on TomTom and Garmin PNDs because the manufacturers make it so, not because PGPSW decided to do so.
As in-built manufacturer systems are identified they are added to the compatibility list, however they need to have the facility first. In cases where the facility exists but there is no data set PGPSW will try to work out the format required and add that to the list of downloads.
PGPSW even try to work out the instructions where the manufacturer themselves don't or can't get it right. Visit the Garmin Forum and see how the Kenwood units have different instructions / requirements depending on which exact model you have. |

Have you tried a different brand of DVD? Do Honda have some kind of DRM protection on their discs?

Yes, I've tried a couple of different brands, but I doubt if it's DRM as it works for a while. It worked once for about 45 miles, then crashed, but the norm is about 10 - 15 mins  But even so, their disc structure is not at all obvious and I defo can't crack their POI structure, and they don't give audible warnings anyway. |

Indeed! We offer data and it is for the manufacturers to design systems that allow the use of that data.
Whilst we can support systems by making our data available in different formats there is little we can do where a manufacturer has made no provision for the use of third party data whatsoever!

Absolutely, we really are friendly. In-car systems typically lag on features by two or three years because of the approvals etc but it is to be hoped that these features will become common over time.

Hi All. Thanks for your responses - having thought about it I now see what the problem is (i.e. the kit used by the manufacturers). Also, I take your point about only taking three years - I am a slow learner but I will try harder!!
