I have just submitted the locations of two sets of new average speed cams of a type I have not seen before.

They are very small, about the size of an 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition Camera. and positioned about halfway up a lampost rather than on the top of a blue mounting pole, which seems to be the norm.

They are not that noticeable Shocked and appear to be a 'stealth' variety!

I would be interested to know if anyone else has spotted any of these.

Nope! Definately not a 'Spike cam'

Shaped like an Average Speed Cam (square/oblong) and yellow in colour!

The two sets I have submitted have 'Average Speed Cam' signs below them and have been put up in the last few days.

Perhaps a new innovation in cash collection Evil or Very Mad

I'll try and get some tomorrow but it will more than likely be over the weekend.

I note from the FAQ's that I cannot post pics directly to the forum pages and I do not have access to online storage. Can I email them to yourself for posting?

Thanks for your help

Pictures on the way, please advise if you don't receive them and I'll try again.

I've added them to your post but I'm not entirely sure what they are. I suspect they may be there for parking enforcement and the Average Speed sign is either a joke or just there to scare?

Any chance of a better photo of the Wheel clamping Sign?

Just emailed a better view of the clamping sign but it is pretty standard fair as far as they go!

The other set of cams is about 400yds up the road from these. The road is very straight and drivers tend not to hang about on it.

Hi
I think that this is probably, CCTV. The camera looks standard enough.
The picture appears to be in an industrial area. Sometimes cameras are put up like this to try to stop lorry drivers blocking roads overnight.

If the cameras have been installed on behalf of the clamping firm, there should be a notice to the effect, CCTV is being used and the name and contact number of the company who holds any images produced.

However, I could be wrong. But i would be interested to know for sure.

The road (Beverley Road) is actually at East Midlands Airport.

It runs between the A453 and the runway though the 'cargo' area where there are a lot of warehouses and assorted businesses. However, it is a bus route and main access road into the airport from a roundabout further up the A453 where there is access to the A42 and M1.

There is a very small sign when you come in the main entrance off the A453 at the traffic lights, that states the roads are private, but only at the main entrance. It is not that noticeable unless you are looking for it.

The police are frequently parked up checking tax discs etc so presumably they have the permission of the airport management to be doing this (if they even require it).

I would have thought that even if the roads through the airport are technically 'private', the use of speed cams would be legitimate.

Hi Harry,

Thanks for your comments.

I had considered CCTV but this road has double yellow lines down both sides for its full length so I would consider the clamping signs to be more in line with these, apart from which there is nothing on the opposite side of the road to look at and they are all angled towards the oncoming traffic!

The 'Average' signs only went up when the cameras did! I suppose it is possible that they may be dummies or CCTV but if not and they are active, I bet they have raked in plenty in their first week!

There are plenty of CCTV and APNR cameras all over the airport and none look like these!

I'll try and email EMA in an attempt to get to the bottom of this as it would be nice to know one way or the other!

If they are CCTV there should be a sign to comply with the data protection act.

Looking at them, there is only one cable to each camera. I can't see it entering the lighting column as the photos are all on the wrong side. If the cable is coax or Cat 5 they will not like it run alongside mains cables, particularly the cable going up the lighting column, as it interferes with the picture.

There doesn't seem to be a scar on the grass indicating a newly dug trench so I don't thnk there is a CCTV coax or Cat 5 cable from it.

Other possibility is a radio linked camera but if so, there would almost certainly be a box alongside with the radio equipment in it it.

I think it's a dummy.

Don't you need two cameras a set distance apart to do average speed checks? Although there are two cameras on the lamp post, they point in different directions so unless there are some more cameras further along the road it is hard to see how an average speed could be determined.

Edit.
Just reread that the OP spotted two sets.

edit2.
Just read about spikes
