I am chairman of our local scouting group and we want to buy 4 handheld GPS devices (such as the Garmin Etrex) for the scouts to assist in route planning, Geo-caching etc.
The problem I see is that I can buy the units but I also need to buy 4 x topo maps of the UK - which we cannot really afford.
So, are there any downloadable topo maps of England which will work on the Garmin devices?

I think I've found my own answer. The Scottish Mountaineering Club have downloadable maps which I can get into Mapsource and then transfer too my Etrex (I have one already).

Yes, the SMC contours are excellent. They put a transparent layer of contours (and trig point / hill names) on the basemap of your Etrex.
But note that they are purely contours - no roads, no towns, no paths.
