mp3s on CD

I haven't been able to find an answer on Google and I hope someone here might be able to help.

I've just changed my car and it has a CD player that can play mp3s from a CD. There is no information about this in the manual. So does anyone know if you just copy the mp3 tracks onto a blank CD and it will play, or do they have to have to be saved in any special way please?

it depends ont eh software used in teh cd player!

sometimes all tracks have to be in the 'root' (ie not in any folders), sometimes you can put tracks into folders (i.e. albums) and sometimes you can even use .m3u playlists... totally depends on the stereo!

have a play with a few different methods!

Thanks MaFt, I'll try copying some onto a CD and see if they play. My Radio instruction book does say something about being able to find folders so that's what I'll try first.

My Astra also has an mp3 compatible CD player. I can use iTunes to select a Playlist from the large number of tracks I have available, or I can just rip an Audio CD to a blanck one using Nero or even Windows Media Player.

The tracks can be organised in folders or just on the root and the id3 tag information can actually scroll the Artist and Track name across the display of the car player.

I think there is a limit of 4 ot 5 'nested' folders, beyond which it will not play, but i think that's all.

By 'nested' folders I mean, for example:

Disk 1
Folder 1
Folder 2
Sub-Folder 2.1
Folder 3
Folder 4
Sub-Folder 4.1
Sub-Folder 4.1.1
Sub-Folder 4.1.1.1
Sub-Folder 4.1.1.2
Folder 5

etc.

The above does not seem to diplay correctly in the Preview - Tabs or multiple spaces don't appear, but I think you will see what I am trying to show.

Thanks Ric, I thought if I used iTunes, I would have to burn them as audio files. Someone on another forum says I have to make sure they are copied as data files not audio files. I'm going to try it tonight.

Mine are saved in Folders by Artist, then Subfolders by Album, so only 2 levels. Anyway it's only a blank CD wasted if I do it wrong.

In iTunes make a play-list with your tracks, click Burn CD at the bottom right of the screen.

Then make sure on the selection box you pick MP3 CD, then click Burn.

I niow have another query if anyone can help please. Once I have burned some mp3s onto a CD, can I add some more later, or does the disc get closed off and can't be written to again please?

Well as it is a form of data disc you should be ok to add it. However i've had the occassional problem doing so in the past and prefer to use a new disc each time.

Try it and see what happens.

I've found using a CD or DVD for data and then adding to it, occassionally it suffers a problem where it looses some of the files that where added earlier. Perhaps it was just poor media or it's one of those pit falls.

Another alternative is to buy 1 or 2 CD RW discs and use those. I often listen to podcasts in the car by using iTunes to burn it to a CDRW (as an Audio CD). Each week i format the disc and use it again.

Thanks again Paul, I'll give that a try. I hadn't bothered because someone on another forum said the CD players in cars don't read rewriteables very well. But if they're successful for you I'll try it.

I'm using a really old Phillips CD-RW. I just buy a new one when it gets knackered and won't burn any more (6 - 18 months). Whilst more expensive than CD-R singly, if you can get CD-RW to work then it would be cheaper in the long run. Just buy a couple but stick to decent known bands (Sony, Memorex etc etc)

Don't forget to format the disc each time in something like Nero before burning again with iTunes as iTunes has no facility to format CD-RW..
