pocketgpsworld.comDespite many many denials from TomTom and statements that it would NEVER be offered as a retail product, TomTom have done a 180 and guess what.....

Yup, as we all long suspected, and as adverts on some retailer sites suggested, TomTom have just launched Navigator 7 as a retail product, available on MicroSD card with maps of Western Europe.

Retail price is £89.95 and TomTom's Navigator 7 micro-site here has full details and a compatibility table.

Quite what this says about TomTom's long term strategy is anybody's guess.

Only a few months back, Harold Goddijn, TomTom's CEO was adamant that their future lay in offering TomTom as a navigation engine for other manufacturers.

And we have been told time and time again that Navigator 7 was only ever going to be a pre-install offering.

So long suffering and until now, loyal PocketPC customers of TomTom now have an upgrade path. But how many have long since abandoned TomTom in favour of one of the competition?

Can you ask them why there are no American maps available for the PDA version 7, this seems strange everywhere else is listed? - There have been a few posts about this issue in the forum recently - Mike

Too little too late? An attempt to get some revenue in at a time when they are struglling and most PDA users have either dropped TT or obtained versions of TT7 by other means..............

....does anyone care to speculate whether Nav 7 is likely to run on my much-beloved steam-driven iPaq 2210, currently running Nav 5.210?

Nav 7 appears not to be compatible with Nokia/Symbian at the moment, either Sad Sad

My guess would be it simply reflects the deep deep hole TomTom have placed themselves in with appalling customer support and a total lack of strategic direction. I think Navigator 7 needs a more emphatic product name - 'TomTom Desperation' gets my vote.

Why they would think loyal Navigator owners would welcome this ridiculously late retail offering beats me... no, more than that, it's down right insulting.

Don't throw good money after bad - to hell with 'em!

So they've finally come to the realization they can either sell it to the public, or have the public steal it outright?

I know it runs on Dell Axim x30 with WM2003SE.

ADDED: their compatibility chart is rubbish, btw. TT7 runs on many other models other than the ones listed there. Anything with at least WM2003SE, a SD slot, 200 to 312 Mhz CPU, and either internal GPS receiver or bluetooth connected one seems to be a good bad, according to surveys amongst the community of users.

I know I shouldn't laugh ,but it may be new but I have seen cracked cracked versions out there ,I think that is mostly why they did not want to go this way as they loose a lot of revenue

Whats the point when it has already been superceeded by navcore 8 on PNA's. I for one will do whatever it takes to keep my upgrade path on a PPC. If that means changing to another company then so be it. Funny, when Tomtom floated I was going to snap up some shares, can see now I would have spent years either masively frustrated or constantly flying out to bang my head on their boardroom table!

Well, according to tomtom it doesnt work on anything less than WM6.1 which is frankly, pointless. All the ipaq 22x users cant run it as HP refuse to offer a WM6.x rom update so once again, those users are back to tt6. Unless they have the skill to flash the rom to a hacked version of WM6.1, in which case they have the knowledge to use a pirated version of tomtom 7 and activate the maps. FFS tomtom, there is **NO** technical reason whatsoever to stop tt7 running on any version of WM.
Foot, gun, shot.
You release it for all versions of WM and watch people buy it.
Dont release it and those who can pirate it, will!!!! Simples!

Too Little,Too Late, I would have thought that the market for TTN7 on the PDA is already saturated by modified versions, If Tomtom want to get themselves back in the market then they should concentrate on issuing TTN8 for the PDA market because they shot themselves in the foot or should that be both feet and lost any control over the TTN7 PDA slot.

Something you need to know about official compatibility lists. Those are the phones they will have tested on, and for which they'll offer a level of support Confused. It's the same for any software vendor.

In their defence, the 2210 is 8yrs old. You can't reasonable expect new software to be backwards compatible with devices of that age.

Good as the 2210 was (I still have mine) it's long since been superseded. HP's refusal or inability to offer a WM6 update is not TomTom's fault.

So - let me get this right - no PDA under WM6.1, no Symbian (UIQ or S60R2 or R3) and no effing idea of what the market wants. Just talking personally here. Symbian S60 R3 (and R5 is already released with touch screen) are one of the most prevalant hand held operating systems in the world, and they ignore it? They sent me an offer to update my maps. When I got there, the page refused to let me have any drop downs due to my Phone not being on the list, even though TTN6 is still a product you can buy. Why?

TT - Come on!

With regards to TT7 for PDAs. I have read the various threads with interest for some time now.
I am currently using TT6 on a Mio P350. It has successfully taken me all over England, Scotland and Wales. Fair enough, the Mio maybe only a basic device but the question for me is. All this fuss, is it really worth it?
Is TT7 really that much better than TT6?
