pocketgpsworld.comThe eagle eyed amongst you will note we announced the availability of an Israel database on Wednesday.

As is often the way with such things, we had been offered the data by a member of an Israeli Google Group who had collated the data. We were in conversation for a few weeks and the data was offered to us for our use.

After posting that the data was now available we received another communication from this member stating that the group as a whole did not agree with our having access to the data. A pity but that is the way it goes sometimes. We don't harvest data from other sources and only accept data where we believe we have full permission to use it.

Today we have received an email from the group complaining of Copyright Violation. As we ourselves have suffered greatly from abuse of our data we are happy to confirm that the data is no longer available and I have removed the story which was left on the front page in error.

So for now, no Israeli data, if you drive there on holiday, keep your eyes peeled!

I would like to add to your throwaway comment about driving in Israel and keeping one's eyes peeled, based on years of experience of driving over there, and which comes completely free of any political (with a big P) inference. To my mind, they are all equally mad once they get behind a wheel. At one time, the shortest period of measured time was the time it took an Israeli driver to hit the horn after the traffic lights had turned from red to green (no amber).

Many who live there drive with "God on their side" and assume they have an inalienable right to go where they want to go and at the speed they want to go out, so consequently road accidents per head of the population(s) are excessive, driving standards are often appalling, with inappropriate use of speed, poor lane discipline on the motorways, badly maintained lorries and massive use of car phones, but most of all, watch out for Egged buses on the main highways. Drink driving, especially among younger drivers is on the increase, too. Zebra crossing, like many countries, are target zones!

Roads are generally good, signage is bi- or tri-lingual and there are traffic cops, radar guns and traffic light cameras but given the volatile nature of many of the inhabitants, one can only assume the attitude of sat-nav devices if the driver goes the wrong way, they would probably switch themselves off in a huff!

All in all, a thrilling experience!

Mike (who lived to tell the tale)
