Oops, my earlier post about Proporta screen protectors for the Active 10 should have read "Archos 7" NOT "Archos 10".
Sorry.
I have just edited my original entry to make it "Archos 7".

Me too - when I learned that the Satmap actually has 3 screens (on this forum - thanks folks)

In the end I chickened out thinking that Satmap have added it to provide a layer of protection for the unit.

I did manage to drop my unit from shoulder height onto stony ground. The outer (removeable) screen suffered some minor cracks, and a button popped halfway out, but pushed back in easily. No other problems so I was glad that I'd kept the unit intact as designed.

A litle mod:
I use a screen protector on the glas like screen and removed (cut out) the clear part of the original cover (keeping the black part). This way the screen protector edges are protected and if u put the A10 screen down, the original cover (black part) will touch and the screen will not. And best of all, it looks good Thumbs Up

What did you use to cut the protector and how did you avoid rough/unsightly edges?

I used a Dremel with a cutting blade (about 30mm round and 2mm thick) then a vile? (sorry i am Dutch) to make the cut straight. Then used the vile under a angle of 45 degr. to make it look nice, then waterproof sandpaper.
I took me about 30min. The screen protector is a old one from a Archos AV400 i think.

"As I mentioned in previous posts, both my cover and inner screens were etched by drying rainwater and the use of a good quality microfibre cloth (as provided with expensive spectacles) to remove this only caused fine scratches on both screens. I came quickly to the conclusion that the screen material is far too soft. Continual rubbing it to clean or dry it will quickly fog it with fine scratches.
I've discarded the top cover, to avoid the trapped rainwater problem, and applied a PDA protective film screen protector to the main screen".

I pasted the above from a 2007 posting and it seems to me that the situation hasn't changed much since then. There are enough examples of users discarding the outer cover to suggest that it is a real problem. I had trouble with mine - rain and grit - very early in its life. Like others I have discarded the outer cover and applied a decent screen protector. Proporta make one that can be cut to size and has a non-glare surface that improves visibility significantly, especially in bright sunlight. It is removable without leaving sticky deposits and can be washed and re-applied if it gets really mucky.

I have also found the Satmap pouch awkward to use and very harsh, so I discarded it in favour of a Lowepro D-Res 10AW and tethered the A10 to the case with a single cord phone lanyard so that I cannot drop it. The Lowepro case has a wider opening, a softer interior and a waterproof cover. It has a velcro belt loop and a pair of "D" rings that make it much easier to find ways of fixing it to rucksac harness and provide a firm anchor for the lanyard. It's not absolutely ideal, but makes you realise how much better the custom made pouch really ought to be.

It is a pity that it is necessary to spend extra money like this, but the £25 quid or so makes such a difference to the ease of use and effectiveness of the device that I really think it is worthwhile.

With these mods. the A10 is by far the best walking GPS I have ever used.

Is the Lowepro D-Res 10AW big enough for the satmap unit. The size of the pouch quoted web sites selling the pouch appears to indicate it is too small. Did you find it ok or do you think the next size up in the range would be a better fit please Question

The 10AW is plenty big enough. The one that I have is exactly the right height, the zip does up easily. Width-wise it is a bit wider than the A10, which lets you get your fingers down the sides to lift it out without difficulty.

When I bought mine I went into a photo dealer and tried a few different ones until I found what I wanted.

Chris32

Thanks for the advice. I have purchased the 10AW pouch.
