I recently took the plunge and bought a 100km square custom 1:25 000 mapcard and I'm very impressed with it (despite the high price tag!)
After checking out the edges of the map, it set me wondering whether it would be possible to fit the entire UK mainland in 1:25 000 on a large capacity SDHC card, and whether the Satmap could handle such a large file (it wouldn't have been able to before the latest firmware update, but maybe now?)
I phrased the title of this thread as "technically" possible because under the current pricing structure, not many of us would be able to afford such a card!
Also, I'm assuming that if I wanted to buy another custom area that bordered my current one, then if I send this card back to Satmap, they could put both areas on the card and as far as the user is concerned, they would behave like a single continuous map on the A10?

It depends on the file format Satmap uses for the maps and the way it's programmed.
For comparison, on Memory Map the mainland UK mapping at 1:25k occupies around 12Gb, but MM can't handle map files larger than 4Gb (probably a limitation of its QuickChart format). There might be a similar limitation in the SatMap code.
Edit: I was assuming you meant seamlessly:- it could have several chunks with only one active at a time and switch from one to another. |

Is a theoretical question as my custom map has been created in three purchases (and yes it is seamless, but they charge an extra fee for consolidating maps) and has cost well over £300 so far. It is both 1:25 and 1:50 but only takes up 100Mb on the card. At that rate it would cost £6K to fill a 4GB card. I did once ask for a dual scale price for the south of UK and was told well over £1000! |
