Hi everyone!

Maybe someone can help. I previously installed application 8.204 due to the infamous 8.3 issues everyone was having. This was a 'massive' improvement. In fact it is the most stable and usable my device has ever been!

Anyway, today I have tried to upgrade my Map (I have the quarterly subscription). I was able to do this with no problems. However, when I have booted the device, my personal information is present on the first screen (albeit in a slightly different format) but no 4 digit security Pin. Therefore as expected, there was also no favourites, so I copied my previous 'MapSettings.cfg' file (from my previous backup). Now the device goes into a continuous re-booting cycle - this happened on a previous update where I ended up re-inputting all my favourites. So, I have reverted to the new 'MapSettings.cfg' file which allows the device to boot - so I guess I'm stuck having to input all my favourites again!

HOWEVER, the real problem I have is that I'm not longer able to 'activate' the 4 digit security Pin as the 'Operate My Go' function in Home results in a fatal error that closes Home every time.

Is there any way I can re-activate my 4 digit Pin. I am so far trying to avoid installing 8.302 due to seemingly unresolved problems by TomTom.

Many Thanks!

Try this...

With the unit connected to the computer but Home not running, use Explorer to delete the mapsettings.cfg file.

Now, copy over the backed up file. Next, on the unit, go to the Favourites icon and delete just one favourite. Disconnect from the computer properly.

Restart the unit and connect to the computer.

Start Home.

Can you now re-enter your code?

You have to have app. 8.3 or above to use the new maps.

How do I access the unit whilst still connected to the computer to delete a favourite? My 720 screen is locked once I click on 'contect' to the computer until I disconnect & reboot.

But the map (825) has installed perfectly? I can use the map no problems and it seems to have full functionality (admittedly not used in anger yet) - albeit my favorites won't copy across - a pain but not the end of the world. My problem is that whilst it will connect and update through Home, the 'operate my go' function will not work (I seem to remember numerous complaints of this happening with various configurations). Without the 'operate my go' function is it possible to set a 4 digit security pin as mine was lost during the upgrade. I know that once set they can be edited from the device, but to initially set-up this needs to be done through Home? Is there any other way?

You have two choices, install the 8,302 update to the device and TomTom Home will see the device and let you set the pin code or, carry on running the 8,204 which TomTom Home will not see and will not there allow connection to the device.
Without connecting to the device you cannot set the pin code - Mike

The four digit security pin is as useful as a chocolate teapot. There have been many discussions about it, all coming to the same result - all it does is slow down the boot up of the device.

By the time it presents its useless self to the hop head who has busted your window and made off with it (or his pub customer), your window is already busted and hop head is not going to bring it back to you because it's got a feeble 4 digit security pin.

Nice to think of him sitting there with a device he can't use though Dennis. Shame that I have read on the forum that the scumbag wouldn't have much trouble circumnavigating the pin code.

I won't post it here as we seem to have decided not to publicly explain how to do it. But it's a lot easier than busting your window.

I knew the v815/825 maps work with v8.300 and above and also v7.900 7.901 7.902 7.903 (for models that can't use v8 yet), but I didn't know they worked with v8.240 Confused

I ultimately changed from 8.204 to 8.302, Andy, but when I finally upgraded to NA 8.25 last Saturday, 8.204 worked fine in conjunction with the 8.25 map.

I don't want a pin on my device but did try setting one on a SD Card that I did not put back into my GO just to see what changes.

I noticed that it changed a few files some time stamps and created two new ones on the root
newsettings.dat and nvideo.gsd
newsettings contains four bytes that changed compared to settings.dat
nvideo.gsd only contains four bytes

I also noticed that if you copy back the original MapSettings.cfg that Home will say it doesn't have a password and again ask you to create a new one.

I don't know what happens once it gets loaded by the bootloader hopefully it gets copied to where the bootloader is and removed it from the flash drive. I can also say that it is not in text so anyone can read and do not know what byte values equal the password.

What can I say you guys got me a little curious Embarassed
Note for others always remember to make a backup
