For those interested, the following link provides a pretty good summary of the various views and speculation as to what Micro$oft may be up to.

ok, good find, layingback Smile

Reading that article, it looks like they're merely trying to FUD/CB their way into getting unearned royalties for a patent that is worth less than the paper it's written on. Again. Although the article, reading between the lines, doubts this'll ever go to trial, I sincerely hope it does. Why? Because then the patents that MS have been so jealously hiding will see the light of day, and we might all see what hot air they're made of Twisted Evil

FUD/B.
Abbreviation.
ab. 1. Fear Uncertainty and Doubt coupled with Corporate Bullying

A summary of current thinking on the TomTom vs Microsoft case.

It almost certainly is about Linux, as Microsoft has often threatened it might one day. But heed the input from Jeremy Allison. Microsoft have left TomTom no way out except fight (or close up shop). This is going to get very ugly for somebody.

[A contrary view is that Microsoft is doing this just to force Open Source via FSF to turn on its own customers (that have already signed with Microsoft) - but I don't thing FSF is dumb enough to fall for that.]

Fortunately the whole Open Source movement is rising up and will provide a lot of help - indirectly - to TomTom; e.g. But this presumes that they have the funds to keep up the fight.

TomTom are going to fight. This is good news for FOSS. Hopefully good news for TomTom too.

Go TomTom go

I don't know who is right or wrong here, just like to see MS brought down a peg or two.

should I point out to TT what appears to be an error in their document. Line 16 refers to 350 when it should be 720 shouldn't it?

No it does not refer to device model numbers it is the last three digits of the patent read para three:

3. Defendant Microsoft has made, used, offered to sell, or sold and continues to
make, use, offer to sell, or sell within the United States and within this judicial district and
division software products and products related thereto, including, but not limited to, its
Microsoft Streets and Trips product, that directly or indirectly infringe TomTom's U.S. Patent
Nos. 5,902,350 ("the '350 patent"), 5,938,720 ("the '720 patent"), 6,660,994 Bl ("the '994
patent") and 6,542,814 ("the "814 patent"). Upon information and belief, Defendant Microsoft
has imported and continues to import into the United States products that directly or indirectly
infringe the '350, '720, "994, and the '814 patents.

I didn't say it was anything to do with device numbers

Quote:
COUNT ONE: INFRINGEMENT OF U.S. PATENT NO. 5,902,350

TomTom has joined OIN (Open Invention Network) as a licensee. That means that they have suddenly added the strength of 275+ patents to their patent defence/attack portfolio, plus a whole bunch more legal expertise. Also interesting to note this now means all other licensees of OIN have royalty-free access to TomTom patents.

Plus if TomTom now 'gets' Linux, perhaps the linux version of Home may see the light of day - assuming TomTom survives this barrage.

Great news layingback

I found this interesting
Peter Spours @TomTom wrote:
Linux plays an important role at TomTom as the core of all our Portable Navigation Devices,” said Peter Spours, director of IP at TomTom. “We believe that by becoming an Open Invention Network licensee, we encourage Linux development and foster innovation in a technical community that benefits everyone.”
What does Peter mean they encourage and folster...I thought they have killed there SDK and all plug-in support.

Didn't these plug-ins have benefits for everyone including TomTom.
If anything they should have offered them on Home once approved.

I know I use TomPlayer to watch a movie when I am in a waiting room.
I use the Tomtom with the car adapter to get me to the destination and keep a charged battery. I then use the battery to watch a movie.

I am just thankful that Wolfgar got TomPlayer to work with NavCore 8 without any TomTom support.
