PocketGPSWorld.com receives many commercial press releases during the course of an average working week. We don't always act on them, but we do keep them for future reference. It occurred to us that these collated releases would be useful to some as a searchable entity on PocketGPSWorld.com.

They may for instance be of interest to those within the SatNav / GPS industry or maybe even journalists who are on the edge or even outside the industry who would normally not be privy to this particular type of release. With this in mind we have created this new forum thread which we will add occasional releases to.

Press release: “No Comfort Zone” for Mobile Device Vendors in the Future

Mobile devices are the biggest-selling consumer electronics products in the world, with more than one billion shipping every year. However, the market is in a state of rapid flux. “Three or four years from now, no mobile device vendor – no matter what their market position today – will be in a ‘comfort zone’,” says ABI Research vice president and research director Stuart Carlaw, in a new webcast available on the firm’s website.

Developed and developing markets for these devices are being shaped by divergent forces. Developed markets in particular are typically highly saturated, highly competitive and highly segmented, with strong product innovation.

Carlaw adds, “The advent of wider mobile broadband access, the drive to maximize data revenue, the desire to push smartphone operating systems down into mid-tier handsets, and rapid innovations in user interfaces will all make the mobile devices of 2010 radically unlike those of today.”

As the technologies evolve and market trends emerge, we will see the user interface advances pioneered by Apple’s iPhone continue, with wider use of accelerometers and the addition of haptic feedback to touchscreens. Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) will become an important market segment, and vendors will increasingly look to diversify their product and service offerings.

“The mobile device market is expanding, not consolidating,” notes Carlaw, “and shows increasing micro-segmentation. Disruptive influences abound.”

In an illustrated audio webcast available on ABI Research’s website, Carlaw delves into the trends that will determine the mobile device market’s future shape and direction, including a feature set explosion, the effort to drive "smart" operating systems into the mid-tier, and specialization in handsets’ basic designs. He examines the impact of mobile broadband and of advanced user interfaces. He concludes by highlighting the future importance of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and the trend for vendors to diversify their business models.

Press Release: Complicated Devices Baffle Brits

Millions of Brits admit they are completely stumped by modern technology, consumer review website Reevoo.com revealed yesterday.

Research revealed more than a quarter of us have no idea how to use digital cameras properly and 21 per cent have problems getting to grips with their SatNav systems.

It also emerged one in five adults don't know what many of the functions on their mobile phones do.

The washing machine leaves more than 18 per cent baffled and another 17 per cent only know the basics when it comes to their camcorder.

Confused shoppers are also bewildered when it comes to getting their heads around MP3 players, microwaves and even their television remote controls.

Chris Winstanley, spokesman for www.reevoo.com, which carried out the poll, said: ''It’s great that manufacturers provide different functions and features as standard on today’s electrical products. But what this research shows is that lots of people actually just want ease of use, rather than the added extras that many of us find too complicated.”

The poll of 2,000 Brits also revealed that more than 38 per cent don't bother to read the manual after buying gadgets. Full results can be seen on Reevoo’s blog Decide What to Buy.

And even when a device goes wrong, more than a quarter will try to fix it themselves, or even buy a new one, instead of turning to the instructions.

A startling 32 per cent of people also admitted to throwing a complicated gadget across the room because they couldn't figure out how to work it.

Chris Winstanley for Reevoo added: ''Reading genuine customer reviews is a great way to decide what to buy – on Reevoo you can find out which products other shoppers find easy to use”.

TOP TEN BAFFLING GADGETS – the full list can be seen on Decide What to Buy

Press release: Trimble Nomad Handheld Integral to World-Record Water Distance Attempt.

Human-powered Boating Adventurer Will Use Waterproof Handheld for GPS Positioning, Wireless Communications and Photography, and Trimble Will Provide a Free Nomad as Part of the Event.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 12, 2008 — World-record-holder for human-powered distance and adventurer Greg Kolodziejzyk is on a quest for another endurance-event record—and the Trimble® Nomad™ outdoor rugged handheld computer will be his virtual first mate. Kolodziejzyk will use a Nomad as a communications tool during his quest to set a new record for the farthest distance traveled on flat water in a human-powered craft. Trimble, a sponsor of the record attempt, will provide a free Nomad in conjunction with the event.

On an optimal-weather day during the week of August 29 September 2, Kolodziejzyk will set out in a specially designed, state-of-the-art, carbon fiber pedal-powered boat called Critical Power 2 (CP2), aiming to churn his way past the existing record. Carter Johnson paddled a surfski 242 kilometers (150 miles) on Lake Merced in California in 2006 to set the existing record. Kolodziejzyk hopes to prove that legs are slightly more efficient than arms over long distances on water.

During his record quest, Kolodziejzyk will be using the Nomad's GPS capability to precisely track his progress, its wireless communication tools to maintain a live Internet map during the event, and its camera attachment to record and transmit images along the way.

In support of Kolodziejzyk's attempt to break the distance record, Trimble will provide a free Nomad to the person who guesses most closely the exact number of kilometers he can cover in 24 hours. A contest entry form, as well as further information on Kolodziejzyk and his record attempt, can be found at: http://www.adventuresofgreg.com/PredictContest.html.

The Nomad, based on a platform originally designed for surveyors and other in-the-field professionals, offers a combination of ruggedness and performance that translates well to the world of extreme sports and other outdoor recreational pursuits. It withstands water, dust and extreme temperatures, offers a long battery life, and features both built-in and add-on capabilities for a wide array of functional capabilities.

"We designed the Nomad to be a versatile and rugged outdoor tool, but were constantly amazed at the range of activities the Nomad is used for," said Rob Davis, director of sales and marketing for Tripod Data Systems, a Trimble company. "For Greg's record quest, the Nomad is a perfect resource in its ability to provide multiple functions with its light weight and waterproof construction."

The record attempt will be made aboard the craft CP2, a carbon-fiber trimaran designed by human-powered boat expert Rick Willoughby of Australia and built by Kolodziejzyk. The CP2 is considered to be the most efficient self-powered boat on the planet over long distances. It can maintain a speed of 10 km/hr at an easy to moderate cycling pace, with a top speed of 17 km/hr. Its 24-foot hull is only 9 inches wide, weighs less than 20 pounds and displaces only 4 inches of water. Kolodziejzyk is positioned in a recumbent seat mounted on the deck, enabling a powerful pedaling position.

A 5-km circular course will be surveyed and marked with buoys on a quiet, sheltered lake in southern Alberta. Starting at 9 a.m., Kolodziejzyk will start pedaling the CP2 and make continual loops around the course, only stopping briefly to receive food and water from a support crew stationed on a dock. Kolodziejzyk will pedal until 9 a.m. the next day. Official observers from the International Human-Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) will be stationed at key points along the circular course to verify that Kolodziejzyk stays outside of the markers and travels the full distance measured.

Press release: 103 Million Consumer Fixed-Mobile Convergence Access Points In Service by 2013

LONDON - August 20, 2008 -
The fixed-mobile convergence market (FMC) is on the brink of very interesting times, according to analysts at ABI Research. UMA-based Wi-Fi dual-mode solutions have seen some significant penetration in both Europe and North America thanks to successful market introductions by T-Mobile in the US (T-Mobile @Home) and Orange (unik) in France, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The first real competitive solution that could rival Wi-Fi-based products has now appeared, in the form of Sprint’s nationwide (US) femtocell-based AIRAVE solution. The questions remain: is there room for both types of convergence in the market; and which solution is best placed to succeed?

ABI Research forecasts a total of 103 million access points of both types to be in service by 2013. Vice president and research director Stuart Carlaw says, “We expect cellular-based femtocells to have taken over the baton from UMA- and SiP-based Wi-Fi solutions by 2013, seizing 62% of the market.” He goes on to add that, “Although UMA-based Wi-Fi solutions have seen early gains in greenfield markets, these solutions have not proliferated much outside their current carrier footprints. This can be attributed partly to the carriers’ desire to assess femtocell developments, but also to lingering concerns regarding the concept of Wi-Fi based fixed-mobile convergence.”

ABI Research’s recent study “Fixed-Mobile Convergence” examines the opportunity for UMA and SIP in converged network services, dual-use handsets, Wi-Fi access points, picocells and femtocells. It includes a review of the current standards position and activities of the major vendors.

The study forms part of two of the firm’s subscription Research Services, Mobile Networks and Consumer Mobility, which also include Research Reports, other Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, ABI Vendor Matrices, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry support.

Press release: Popular GPS Systems Get Extreme Makeovers: Voice-Lifts and Personality Transplants Reported

GPS software company PIGtones.com now makes it possible to easily replace the standard GPS voices with various entertaining, risqué and politically incorrect alternatives. The growing selection of 12 different GPS voices includes Arnold the Governator, Elvis, Yoda, "W", and more. http://www.PIGtones.com

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) August 22, 2008 -- Dale Hensel, co-founder of PIGtones.com, (Politically Incorrect GPS Tones), has a unique way to cope with high gas prices that's unlikely to enter the political debate. Instead of pain-at-the-pump, Hensel's Pigtones.com supplies laughter-behind-the-wheel.

It's amazing how so few people knew that Garmin GPS and Tom Tom GPS Systems systems can have their standard voices so easily replaced. Of course, we want PIGtones to do for GPS what ringtones did for cell phones.

According to Hensel, the process is easy. "First, step #1: purchase a GPS system (prices continue to drop), which reduces the chance of getting lost and wasting fuel. Step #2: replace standard GPS voices with PIGtones GPS voices that will definitely increase the smiles per gallon."

The biggest challenge to PIGtones? Communicating the fact that it's now possible to replace the standard (and boring) GPS voices in the first place. Having launched the new PIGtones.com website recently, Hensel shared, "It's amazing how so few people knew that Garmin GPS and Tom Tom GPS Systems systems can have their standard voices so easily replaced. Of course, we want PIGtones to do for GPS what ringtones did for cell phones."

A review of the PIGtones web site reveals over a dozen "voicetones" from the familiar celebrity impersonator voices (Arnold, "W", Yoda, Elvis) to the more risqué and even downright controversial. There are voice samples for each on the site. Does Hensel expect a backlash from the more politically incorrect voices?

As Hensel responded, "Well, we do call ourselves PIGtones as in Politically Incorrect GPS. Do we expect heat? Sure, but if we can help someone get over any road rage by adding a few laughs to their trip, it'll all be worth it. Besides, we are an equal opportunity offender. We even have a contest that lets the driving public decide who we parody next."

As marketing trends go, GPS systems are hot. During the 2007 holiday season, GPS systems outsold every other electronic device, even iphones and ipods. It's estimated that by 2013, over 900 million people worldwide will use some type of GPS system according to ABI Research.

One reason for the rapid increase in sales is the equally rapid decrease in GPS System prices. The average price fell from $322 in 2006 to $171 in 2007. And yet with so many technology advances in GPS, one element was lacking: a variety of voices that consumers now expect these days when it comes to customizing their personal electronic devices.

So rather than waiting for the GPS manufacturers to offer voice alternatives, Hensel and his partners, Ryan Harper and Brad Costanzo, engineered their own solution. PIGtones.com offers its customers tutorial videos on how to replace the old GPS voices with new PIGtones GPS voices. The process is simply a matter of connecting the GPS unit to a computer with a standard USB cable. And the price of each voice is very affordable, about the cost of three gallons of regular gas.

To learn more about PIGtones and listen to the latest voice samples as well as claim free POI (Points of Interest) maps, visit: http://www.PIGtones.com

About PIGtones.com:
A leading edge GPS software company, PIGtones.com brings innovation and entertainment to GPS navigation systems. PIGtones GPS voices are available for Garmin and Tom Tom GPS systems. PIGtones also offers its customers thousands of (POI) Points Of Interest) Maps for immediate download.

Press release: Connected PNDs Delayed by Technical Issues and Economic Climate
Location Aware Services Research Service | Connected Navigation Devices

LONDON - August 21, 2008

The wave of announcements of connected PNDs earlier this year has not yet resulted in many launches or significant sales volumes. The success of the Dash Express has been limited by a lack of branding and distribution strength, and connected PNDs from Mio and Magellan have still not been launched in the US.

“Technical difficulties, carrier agreements and the general economic climate have been the main reasons for the delays,” says ABI Research director Dominique Bonte. “For many PND vendors, cellular connectivity is a completely new project representing a huge challenge in terms of implementation, the development of new services, and the negotiation of agreements with carriers. Moreover, the worsening economic climate, the slowdown of the PND market growth, and the profitability issues faced by most vendors have resulted in connected PNDs ranking lower on all parties’ priority lists.”

However, Mio has now also announced its first connected PND for the Asia-Pacific market, aimed at professional users and supporting phone calls and local search. The Moov 380 will be launched in Taiwan at the end of 2008 and will offer 2.75G and 3G connectivity based on Qualcomm chipsets.

Bonte concludes: “While there is no doubt connected PNDs will become widespread, vendors will face an ongoing challenge in developing a wide range of compelling real-time services and educating users about the benefits of connected navigation.”

An ABI Research study, “Connected Navigation Devices,” examines the features, trends, drivers and barriers affecting connected Personal Navigation Devices. It describes all major solutions, applications and business models, and includes recommendations to the major navigation players. The report contains forecasts by region for shipments, hardware and service revenues of connected PNDs and services. Press release: Predictive Traffic Information to Revolutionize Navigation and Trip Planning - Commercial Telematics Research Service | Location Aware Services Research Service | Predictive Traffic Information

LONDON - August 19, 2008

Powerful predictive traffic models are being developed by companies like Inrix, TrafficCast and Journey Dynamics, models that enrich historical and real-time speed profile data with metadata such as scheduled events, weather forecasts, vehicle type, and driving behavior. Commercial solutions are expected to be available in 2009.

“While real-time traffic solutions are useful for traffic congestion avoidance and improved calculation of the fastest route, they remain limited by their lack of forecasting accuracy,” says ABI Research director Dominique Bonte. “The increased reliability offered by traffic prediction models will contribute to traffic services reaching a mature phase, increasing consumers’ willingness to pay and driving uptake to more than 300 million users by 2013.”

Predictive traffic will enable time-dependent routing which takes into account future traffic conditions along the route. It will also make accurate and reliable up-front trip planning on fixed mapping sites such as MapQuest a reality. Proactive traffic alert messages will allow consumers to modify or postpone their travel. Professional users will appreciate the improved accuracy of Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), while for vertical segments just-in-time routing techniques will increase the efficiency of trip and resource planning, thereby decreasing costs and improving customer service.

While the emergence of real-time two-way connected navigation devices for the upload of driver profile and behavior information will be an important driver for predictive traffic solutions, hybrid solutions based on local clients will dominate in the near future.

However, challenges related to user education, processing power and latency, and interactive user interfaces must be overcome before new forecast-based traffic use cases will be embraced by a large number of drivers.

ABI Research’s new study “Predictive Traffic Information” offers insight into the technologies, benefits, use cases, drivers, and barriers of predictive traffic solutions. It includes descriptions of the main players and subscriber forecasts per type and region. It forms part of the Location Aware Services and Commercial Telematics Research Services.
