Speed Cameras, GPS, SatNavsRenault have this morning announced the first of their factory fit Carminat TomTom systems produced in partnership with TomTom.

TomTom announced back in September 2008 that they were partnering with Renault to produce TomTom Carminat branded factory fit integrate navigation systems for Renault and the first in the line is a solution for the Clio range.

Dubbed as the 'first fully integrated and affordable GPS navigation solution' it is expected to cost a very reasonable €500, has a 5.8in screen with LIVE connectivity, traffic and speed limit information (traffic via RDS-TMC) as well as speed camera locations.

As this is a built-in system it does not have a touch screen but instead utilises Renault's 'Central Command' system for access. Crucially the device can be updated using TomTom HOME via a removable SD Card.

Full details will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show but in the meantime here are some images:

I wonder how Renault would react to such issues as the stuttering voices fiasco. Something like this affects their brand more than TT. I trust they have a robust contract in place!

If the updates are via TT with the same availability and costs as PNDs, then this is a major step forward with intergrated car systems. I wonder who is responsible for software and operating queries.

This looks really excellent - seems as though the display also has the cars radio integrated into it (bottom line) and a few other changes over the normal TT display - hopefully other manufacturers will offer this soon, as the TT is massively superior to the integrated systems most manufacturers offer (like BMWs etc!)

That's correct, it is the interface for the radio, CD, MP3

Agreed, it's offers s much more current system than that normally available and more importantly can use custom POIs, speed cam databases etc with full integration into the vehicle speakers etc.

Interestingly Renault have chosen not to incorporate gyros instead relying entirely on the GPS signal alone.

A decent aerial on the roof will go a long way towards supporting the GPS signal tho, rather than the internal one of a tomtom inside the tinbox of a car. I know my Renault SatNav is virtually instant against a tomtoms' few minutes to pick a signal.

True but that won't help it in tunnels. But I take your point and it helps keep the costs down.

Hi flyingfuzz
I entirely agree with you about Renault and its reaction to a stutter on the inbuilt Tomtom. After weeks of no cure for the stutter I’m sure that Renault would be looking for blood. Tomtom's blood.

Sorry but having seen the Carminat system in my fathers new Renault Laguna I doubt it!

That system has more bugs than an NHS Hospital. To enter the address of any journey takes so long that you could have driven there by the time you'd succeeded.

In comparison the TT stutter is almost inconsequential!

Hi Darren
Your comments do surprise me. One would have thought that customer satisfaction would be the prime number one priority on any manufacturer’s list. But there you go, it’s the day and age we live in.

Anyway, forgetting all that, I would rather have my TomTom device that I can pop into my pocket than any inbuilt thingy.

Pros and cons with both types of device, removable tomtom is very handy, if using other cars, hire cars etc. Also the update features are better, safety cameras etc. But the inbuilt thing hasnt got wires trailing around, picks up the signal almost immediately, and when you park up, your not stuffing everything associated with it into pockets or glove boxes.
And you gotta admit... it does look lovely!

a hidden away from view tomtom dock would be way way better :P

of course it would be limited to a list of specialist supported models as it would need to be powered + external antenna + line out... but then on the plus side... you would be able to curry it on foot... plus you could possibly upgrade later on...

As mentioned, the lack of a touch screen is the big downer on this, using buttons and dials to enter addresses for a "power" user of a satnav will quickly become a pain. Plus that display in the pics seems to be too far from the driver for the size it is.

I used to have a built in sat nav in a Nissan but still used my TomTom unless I was going somewhere that I had already programmed into the in-built.

Its the first step though.Maybe in time the car makers could provide a generic touch screen display. Then, provide a means of storing a Satnav in the glove box etc and connect your own TT or Garmin etc but use the cars touchscreen as its display. So it would be akin to controling your iPod through your head unit, you would be controling an external Satnav through the head unit.

And maybe one day we'll all be driving hover cars. geez some finicky people here. I imagine what you'd say to the inventor of the wheel... 'Not bad, but would look better with low profiles'

Does that mean that we should accept the stuttering voice because there are worst products out there? I for one don’t think so.

I can see a huge problem for any car manufacture that uses third party electronics that then cause problems. Not all car uses are computer savvy and can address these issues such as described on your excellent web site. If my “purchased with car” sat nav started stuttering I would go straight back the car dealer and get them to fix it, probably along with everyone else.
