Speed Cameras out of orderThe Mirror Newspaper has approached all of Britain’s police forces to ask how many speed cameras were unused.

Although many forces failed to respond or refused to answer their questions, the newspaper did glean some revealing figures:

Within the...

* Met Police Force Area, 323 out of 744 speed cameras are not working

* West Midlands Force Area, 191 out of 281 speed cameras are not working

* Avon and Somerset Force Area, 14 out of 63 speed cameras are not working

The Mirror quotes a Met source: "Loads of cameras were put up in the 90's but when new guidelines were set out six or seven years ago about where Gatsos could be put, loads of them didn't meet the criteria. They have been left in place to scare motorists. They have a deterrent effect and encourage safe driving."

The Watford Observer have reported that all Hertfordshire speed cameras are 'active' in response to the Mirror's reports that two out of every five cameras across the country are not in use.

Thats quite a lot of film they must be using unless all motorists obey the law in the County:

Gatso = 114
Mobile = 97
Truvelo = 7
RedLight = 17

Is the current tally showing for that county - Mike

There are five fixed cameras that I pass very regularly in the south of Lincolnshire.
Two have been inoperative for more than a year as a result of carelesly placed, petrol filled, tyres. Shocked
One Truvelo is inoperative due to road resurfacing which removed the induction loops about 9 months ago, the induction loops have never been replaced.
One has a camera loaded occasionally and one has had a camera permanently loaded for many months with the film regularly replaced.
I have wondered for some time if money to repair cameras in Lincolnshire is no longer available.

For my sins, I was in the relevant Highways Department when Gatsos were first introduced in Avon. Memory completely fails me for precise details, but I recall it was something like 8 boxes and only 3 cameras to go inside them. Something tells me it cost £30,000 a site (unless it was £30,000 for the sum of all sites - that was in the days when petrol came in gallons and was expensive at 25 pence). So far as I'm aware, similar ratio factors continue to this day.

It has always been the case that there are more boxes than cameras. In the early 70's when we lived in South Africa they had red light camera boxes all over the place but they only had a few actual cameras to fit into them, the secret was that you never knew which boxes were loaded.

Who is going to test the 'empty' UK speed camera boxes by deliberately speeding past them? Certainly not this little black duck, so the Police and local authority will continue to get away with this deception. I don't know if a device is available to measure if cameras are emitting radar pulses, if there is such a device I am sure it is illegal in the UK.
