Hi all,

Been here as a guest a few times and wanted to ask a few Q's.

I've had a bit of a windfall and thought of upgrading my Quest I on the bike... Up until two days ago Halfords were advertising the Zumo 550 (have to use Halfords, the windfall is in Capital Bonds which I can only spend in limited places), but yesterday it disappeared off their site and a call said they were no longer stocking it.

That leaves me the TT Rider 2... The bike is a Guzzi Norge, and they are prewired for TT Rider 2 so that is a plus, but having used the Quest with the suction cup mount for a long time and also a GPS 152 on the boat, I'm a bit of a Garmin fan....

Trawled through here for opinion, but in these circs it's not just a case of a simplpe choice. Is the TTR2 that much worse than the Zumo 550?

Thanks in advance

There is much to like about the Zumo but I prefer the RIDER. The one thing you don't get is a desktop planner with TomTom though.

If you need PC route planning capability for use with the TomTom have a look at the application called "Tyre" see Here - Mike

Many thanks to both of you... Anecdotal info here in the office is of a number of very satisfied TomTom users, so because of the benefits (mount and cabling) I'll take the Tom TOm route...

If I'd had a choice I'd have gone with TTR2 - but it doesn't come with a connection for an Autocom - only bluetooth to a headset. Since I already have an autocom and bike-bike, the Garmin 550 was the only answer.

TT have a better map system (IMHO) but Garmin have a better support service.

As for route planning on your PC, for TT users, you can use Autoroute and then convert your routes to .itn files. So that's sorted then!

I bought the TTR2 on Xmas eve, and gave it it's first real test on the bike today ( used it in the car on battery power a couple of times) . I'm impressed. Carried out a full mobile phone con at around 60 mph. I found it harder to hear than my correspondent.

The mapping and routing is much better than my old Garmin Quest ( one of my gripes with that was that despite buying 2008 maps they were way out of date - eg the new A30 dualling wasn't in there, despite it having been OPEN mid 2007).

At the moment I'm pleased.

Try turning the volume up while you are using the handsfree during a phone call, tap the lower left corner of the screen and adjust the volume this way - the phone volume setting can only be adjusted while making a call, and by default it won't be at 100% - Mike

Thanks for the tip... That's the other negative about TomTOm compaed with Garmin, the manual is only really a quick start guide, not a full manual
