This is in reference the US version only please as there are many differences I've heard.
After more reading from other forums, I'm really pulled between TT2 and D3 for US mapping. I've used Garmin IQue 3600 (best), PMN (2nd), and teletype (sucks badly). I've heard the routing in TT2 and D3 both are very poor. It doesn't seem like anyone can get it correct. Has the poor routing in the US been improved from the latest patches? I know D3 has a new patch out early this month already. Can anyone with the latest US update please comment? I will be receiving D3 in the mail tomorrow and don't want to open it if it's going to be poor. Then I cannot return it. Can someone PLEASE route these two trips for me and post? My past programs hardly ever do these two routes correctly. I need these from TT and D3 US versions:
Start:
505 Baywood St
Vandenberg, Ca 93437

to these two places:
6911 N. Matus
Fresno, Ca 93437

And to
CostCo store in Santa Maria Ca 9343?

Usually the Costco route takes me through the city and the Fresno route will not take the hwy 41 off of the 46 just past chalome <SP>.
If I can only get the results before I open the package tomorrow I'd be grateful. Thanks. I will post this on the TT site also to see what route TT US will give.

Also, what is the max zoom levels on D3 and TT?
Using PMN its only 250ft. I got 100 ft for Garmin IQue which was great for Geocaching! Do either of these programs have accuracy rings around the arrow while driving?
Both support SiRF protocal correct?
How many POI are there in each D3 and TT? POIs are very handy and heard TT doesnt have many. Garmin had 3 million which was great. However, TeleType had 12 million!

I'll try to create the route when I get some time but in the meantime here are some items to consider

routing is dependent on knowledge about street attributes, and therefore map currency. Nobody get this 100% right because the maps are always old. Sometimes just a year old, sometimes more than 5 years

- TomTom is better at permanent avoids so you can plan routes around areas that you don't like or where you know there are map errors

zoom levels are good enough for street mapping in both products. Your point about geocaching is mute because neither TomTom nor Destinator are supposed to support off road activity. Continue using your Garmin for that

SiRF protocol is just for geeks. Keep your hands off that, and stay with NMEA

TomTom supports infinite numbers of POIs (well, kind if) because you can add your own ad lib. Destinator are only starting to create the POI exchange .

Both programs use the "snap to road" feature so your "accuracy rings" question is mute again. They tell you the number of sats in use - that's good enough to check accuracy. You see the DOP with other programs if you really need it.

Permanent avoids would be very handy. Geocaching is something I do not too often and the street programs work fine. They just show my track through blank area, but I can walk to the point when shown on the map. With the Garmin which was for street, at 100 ft zoom, I could just look at the map and see if I was "standing" on the POI and be close. However, with the PMN at 250ft, this is more dificult to do. I don't need nor want to purchase a GPS with topo maps for off road use. Most of the POIs are just off the road anyway or a short hike. PIM is its primary use with GPS secondary and geocaching low on the list, but still needed. Thanks for the info. If you have used both TT2 and D3, which I believe you have, could you send me a private email on your recomendation? I'm running low on $ and dont want to purchase TT2 if I open D3 and find out its not very good at routing. For me routing is more important then the most current roads.

I have been leaning toward the D3 also because of the display of road names on/next to the streets which TT doesn't.

Some remarks.
The first address is listed as Lompoc, not Vandenberg Village. The second address has a wrong ZIP code. And lastly, why on earth would a map contain a Costco location as a POI?

Vandenberg is actually its own zip code different then Lompoc. PMN shows vandenberg as its own city.
I go to CostCo for hotdogs often, however, it test the programs ability to use clark ave and not downtown. My teletype and Garmin both had CostCo as a POI. PMN and D3 dont. I guess you would call them more of a yellow page listing then POI since there is nothing interesting about them except their hotdogs.
D3 doesn't have a avoid point, just a road. What a disapointment.

This gives you an example about the quality of the map data - and we are talking Navteq here who are supposed to be the most up to date...

TomTOm's permanent avoids help to ease the pain a little better, but they also don't help with new roads that are missing from the maps. No map data provider will ever allow any navigation program vendor to allow end users to tinker with map data (like changing an intersection or adding a road).

You still need the TomTom route?

Don't need tom tom thanks. I am waiting for the Teletype update. They said about 2 more weeks. Their program has the most options I've see. I think it also has permanent avoids, multi wp routing, good maps, option for 12MILLION POIs, dynamic map loading, etc. The last version I tried the routing was not good and using aviod points only made it route back to the same road ASAP even if it was miles away. I have check the map for my area and the roads are current for the new housing project.
