Apple are to host a 'Let's Rock' event 10am Tuesday 9th September in San Francisco - 6pm UK time.

Speculation has it that the event (in keeping with previous annual events) will herald a new generation iPod Nano, the fourth such iteration of the device.

Also rumoured to be making first appearances are iTunes v8 and iPhone firmware 2.1.

As well as featuring bug fixes to most of the deal-breakers that have emerged following the release of the GPS-capable iPhone 3G, it has been suggested that firmware 2.1 will include a number of new, sat nav accommodating features which have been held back from recent development releases, finally enabling the handset to deliver turn-by-turn sat nav capability, and might therefore also include new SDK Ts&Cs enabling 'navigation' applications.

A previous statement from Apple suggested that sat nav would be dependent upon Apple's own software engineers, leading to further speculation that any voice-enabled sat nav for the iPhone 3G would be based upon developments around the gps-enabled Google maps application already pre-installed on the iPhone, and might not after all welcome in an era of third party developers porting existing applications to the platform.

As ever, the Apple reality-distortion field is in full flow, and such 'information' is at best unfounded and speculative until the event itself.

Best coverage at this time (including a live' blog feed from the event itself) can be found over at Ars Technica.

At today's 'Let's Rock' event Apple did indeed introduce their fourth generation iPod Nano, a 2nd generation Ipod Touch, iTunes v8 and announced the availability, from Friday, of firmware 2.1 for the iPhone (including 3G), but did not reveal any details beyond bug fixes (battery life improvements, fix for crashing apps, fewer dropped calls and faster backups), other than to state the upgrade would also include 'some great new performance enhancements', whatever that means!

So, Friday 12th September is our next focus, though if there was anything especially exciting to be announced, one imagines Apple's Steve Jobs wouldn't have spared us during today's presentation. An event sadly lacking the turn-by-turn navigation news we might have hoped for.

Firmware 2.1 appears to have delivered many of the 'fixes' for existing performance issues, but there's nothing to confirm improved gps functionality (although the supporting SDK now supports Heading and Speed parameters to its CoreLocation component).

No doubt we'll look to developers to indicate whether we're entering the era of true turn-by-turn navigation; I did just check the current SDK Ts&Cs and they retain the exception to real time navigation.

It's getting boring!
